K100RS sidestand hits muffler

I recently bought a 1987 K100RS Motorsport in fantastic original condition.  The bike is gorgeous in every way and has obviously been cared for by a loving owner - no bodges in sight.  Even under the rear fender and beneath the engine is like new.  How do I know?  Because I've been crawling around under there trying to figure out how to keep the sidestand from banging on the muffler.

I thought I had a rattly exhaust shield until I realized that the sidestand is resting directly on the muffler seam and making noise.  It's not quite in its "pocket" of the rubber cup that it's supposed to rest in.  I can see where the little rubber bumper of the sidestand "handle" used to rest on the muffler body, but something is out of alignment now.  Maybe the muffler was removed for a spline lube and not put back quite right - but for the life of me I can't see anything out of whack.  The sidestand itself seems to be straight as well, the bolt is tight, and the centerstand support bracket is solidly anchored in place.

Anyone else have this issue?  I rarely use the sidestand but I'd like to keep it for that odd hill that needs a special parking job now and again.  It just kind of sucks when it's vibing on the muffler and goes WHANG every time you retract it.  Not very BMW!

Mine is an '86 and it's the same way. I considered putting a piece of rubber on the kickstand at one point until common sense kicked in and told me that the pipe would eat that for dinner.  I've removed the pipe to do some work and noticed a dent was made due to retracting the stand throughout its years. I now consider it an inconspicuous groove for the kickstand which is as far in as it will go to accomodate the stand. So being that there is nothing else that i can do about it, I just now enjoy smacking the kickstand back just to make a cool sound out of it before I burn rubber on the road.

Moral of the story... whatever sucks, make it cool!  :loopy:

Hi and welcome.
Mine did that.  I took the muffler off and found that someone hadn't put it together very well.  It was loose, turned funny and no "donut" in the muffler at the header pipe connection.   Once I fixed that and put it back together, all is well.

So, try taking it off and see what you see.

Make sure the muffler is square to the bike. like the rear is square so make it vertical and horizontal to the bike and loosen the clamps on the muffler pipes connection and see if pullung it back a bit helps. My K100 was like that when I first got it and I found that they are fussy about the correct position.
Also the rubber stop should have a groove for the center stand and the side stand.

Those K100 headers are a bitch to get lined up properly.....

Thanks guys for the help.  I did loosen up all four header clamps and took off the muffler rear mount but things still weren't lining up.  I think I will save that one for spline lube time, it does not look like a fun project sticking those headers back in where they go.  Much appreciated.
