Tank badge
« on: December 16, 2011, 10:53:04 PM »
I'm close to finalizing the look of my RS. I bought it in beat up shape, so the restoration is up to my imagination. So far, I've removed the fairing, added dual headlights (replaced the wiring with a thicker gauge), added a stebel nautilus air horn, and placed cool 1 inch l.e.d. turn signals on the forks. I replaced the ripped stock corbin seat with an oem seat and got oem handlebar mirrors. I removed the ugly boxy plastic saddlebags and replaced them with smaller, lower profile canvase bags. My RS is now just a custom K, which i think I might call it Special K :yes (unless that's taken... is it??). The LAST step is a flat black paint job. However, before i paint the fender, I will be cutting about 4 or 5 inches off the bottom to eliminate the touring look. The tank is already sanded down. I'll be posting pics soon enough, but for now I'm showing what the bike looked like as I first got it.

Questions... being that I'm sanding and repainting the tank, the scratched badges  :roundel have to come off. Bikebandit and other sites don't seem to have them in stock. I searched ebay and there are several ones available, but none say they are for the K.  So far I found cheap china knockoffs and ones for cars. Does anyone know which ones are good and what the exact size of the badge is in millimeters/ inches? Are the knockoffs any good?

What's the best way to remove the original badges? Thanks.

Pry them off carefully - with a nylon or plastic tool. Use Googone or similar to get the glue off.  Then hit it with isopropyl alcohol or something to get the area cleaned of glue residue.

Then replace them with 70mm "3D" roundels - BMW part 51142328269.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Not sure if you were serious or not with the question about "Special K" being taken, but there is a K Bike customizer Larry Romestant,  that calls his bikes, and his web site,  by that very name -> http://www.specialks.net/.  No reason you can't also call yours a "Special K" too. If you haven't found his site yet it has lots of great ideas.

Good luck with your project.

Sweet! I got these from england for a little over 20 bucks. Not oem, but the quality is identical. Going with an all matt black look. I will stick them once my tank is painted.
