Cafe racer - BEP and Blinker issue
« on: March 08, 2021, 11:09:30 AM »
Hi All

Last year I turned my K100 into a Cafe Racer, replacing the speedo with an aftermarket (ebay) and installed it through the Marulabs BEP 3.0. All with succes.
Sadly over the season, the battery got drained, which seemed to have killed the speedo.

(1) After having replaced the speedo with a new (similar), its still not turning on. If I move the wire on the BEP from SWP to BAT, it turns on (even if the ignition is off). Does this mean that the BEP is malfunctioning or is the problem elsewhere? The Bike can start without issues.

(2) When I installed the new speedo into the BEP last week, I tried to turn on the blinkers, but for some reason it turned both blinkers on. I've searched the internet, and have found that the blinker relay could be the sinner. BUT - is it? And - can it be the reason why my speedo won't turn on?

Clearly - I need help :D

Testing SWP output on the BEP is straight forward.  Just use a voltmeter between SWP and GND on the BEP to see if it outputs +12V or so with the ignition turned on and 0V with the ignition turned off.  If not, then the BEP is defective.  You can also tap into another switched power line on the bike if you want to bypass the BEP problem.

Were your blinkers working properly before you had the issue with the battery?  Malfunctioning of the turn indicators should have nothing to do with the BEP or the speedometer. You might want to check on Fuse 7 since it supplies switched power to the flasher module.  It also supplies power to the horn and the fan so if those are also acting up, fuse 7 could be your culprit.

Yes, everything worked fine last year (blinkers, speedo, revs, everything).
When we're talking about fuse #7, we're talking the simple ones attached outside the electrics box right? (sitting nicely in a row) If so, yes - I've checked (and just in case replaced) all of them.
However, the fan has been acting up, when I was fiddleling with the wires - but I expected that to be due to the connections/disconnections. If I turned the ignition off and on, it worked perfectly normal.

Hello Rob,
Where are you in Toronto? I need help with my K1100 hoping you could help me or direct me to any local shop that works with the bricks.
Thank you

I'm in North York, near Leslie and York Mills.  I certainly can help you diagnose any problems that you might have, to the best of my ability.  What exactly are your problems, flyingbrick.kafe?  I would suggest that you open a new thread so that they can be discussed with the rest of the membership who might have helpful information to contribute.
