stuck fuel ring, and other K11rs se maintenance queastions
« on: March 21, 2019, 12:03:13 PM »
Hi all!

I am trying to take advantage of my final days of spring break, and the fact that it's yucky wet outside to get the K1100 (1996, SE model) ready for spring.

Not without issue, I believe I have successfully replaced the K&N air filter with a brand new one (non-K&N).  If I can figure out how to get the housing clips back on, that part will be complete.

I want to replace the fuel filter.  When I unscrewed the four phillips screws and went to lift out the filler cap assembly, it wouldn't budge!  Any ideas on how to free this up so I can remove this assembly and give myself access to the inside of the fuel tank?  I am leery of any solvents (WD40, PB Blaster) as I don't want anything to hurt my paint.

If it is not yet apparent, I am not very mechanically inclined, but I am trying my best to learn and grow.

That's all for now... more for sure as I move on to fluid changes!

The best approach is to find out if these products affect paint, not presume they do. If you spill some, wipe them off with a rag. Try them on a police car's finish first.

Gaskets are removed with patience and a scraper. Heat can help. Soak a rag in boiling water, wring it out then mold it around the surface of the gasket and take a nap after you treat the scalding of your hands. Try to awaken before the rag has cooled. Work a corner of your scraper between the gasket and its mounting surface and start releasing it. You could always go the vegan route and use vinegar or olive oil as a releasing agent. Take your time. You have your whole life ahead of you.
