Stand and Deliver
« on: July 15, 2018, 07:10:49 PM »
A question. Has anybody used a k1200 stand or side stand on a K100?  The K100 side stands have a tendency to rot and the lever snaps off. The 1200 stand seems more durable.

Skunky you can stop the stands from rotting quite easily. Remove the stand and then remove the end plugs, and then fill with a product called LPS 3 or similar then drain into a old container. Once the LPS 3 has dried refill and do it again a couple of times. It forms a waxy coating and stops it from rusting. It's used offshore on the oil platforms in a very harsh environment. If you ride on salt laden roads you might want to renew it every couple of years. If the end plugs are cracked or don't fit correctly either silicone them in or renew them. http://www.lpslabs.com/site_files/tech_downloads/TDS_00316.pdf

Thanks Martin. I bought a side stand off fleabay because the one on my K was already broken,  cleaned the surface rust off and made like the stones Painted it Black. Three weeks later in snapped in exactly the same place as the old one. I could weld a tube over the break but it doesn't give me confidence in the integrity of the rest of the stand to support the weight.
However the 97 K1200 stand has a stronger looking kick and also a cut off switch instead of a spring that pulls the stand up if you take the weight off it.
It looks similar and the engines are I believe built on the same engine block.

K1100 side stands have been popular substitution here because they are stronger than the K100/K75 stands and have the same bolt pattern.

Here's some information regarding the K1200 difference.

Thanks Laitch. Looks like I should be able to use the K100 stand Bracket with the K1200 stand. May be worth the gamble . I do like the idea of fitting the cut off switch.

I bought a K1200 stand for my K100RS and the legs are shorter.  Bought a K1100 stand and still need to swap it out.

You can add or subtract spacers between the stand mount and the engine.
