Klonk from rear hub
« on: May 29, 2018, 05:21:28 PM »
Hi. Been riding almost every Day since i finished my K - summer started a month early here[emoji41] But today - after doing around 170 kmh on the highway for around 15 min I noticed a loud “ gonk- gonk - gonk” from the rear hub[emoji52] - noticed only after I turned off from the highway!
It is late now and I only had time to look at the rear hub / wheel. It seems that there is a lot of play somewhere in the rear drive I Can only Think of the joint ( ball joint?? Is it called that? ) That would explain the noise - which almost disappears when under load - but is very loud when in neutral/clutch disengaged and just Rolling?
Just hoping someone experienced the same - so I could order parts right away...ready for the weekend.
Regards
Christian

Do not ride it until you have solved the problem. A Brick owner has just recently had a massive failure of the universal joint. He was extremely lucky he didn't get hurt or even worse.

greetings...

when you hear gonk- gonk - gonk you must stay on the throttle... if you lift off the throttle the driveshaft will lock up against the swing arm and cause your rear tior to lock up... staying on the gas to keep the driveshaft free and rolling to a stop is prefered...

At last I had some time to take it apart. There was nothing wrong with the driveshaft - looked brand new and splines was in Good shape with White grease on! But the rear hub 🤥... there is no noticeable play in it .... but the new Oil looks more Like aluminium anti seize[emoji848].... when I pull the drive pinion i Can move it about 15 mm back and forth - Like on picture!
Guess something is chewed up in there causing the “clonck”

Is the nut loose on the drive pinion.

That is a complex bearing and needs to done up tight and properly spaced.

Contact Tom Cutter at the Rubber Chicken Racing Garage in PA. He's a drive specialist. Pay and cry now rather than being caught out later.

Det er lige ham jeg kører ud til - har været der før. Jeg har heldigvis en ekstra cykel jeg låner navet fra - så jeg kan komme ud og køre snart [emoji56]. Men tak for tippet!

Hi again. Still not on the Road.... rear hub is totally chewed up and not fixable....
At the moment the only rear hub I Can get my hands on is from a K75.... mine is a K100 RS. What does the difference in gearing do on the Road .... It Will reach 60 mph before.... and I seldom Cruise at more than 60 - 70 mph as my K is naked! Just in doubt if I Will notice the difference or if it Will make my K horrible to ride??

Shouldn't make any really discernible difference beyond faster acceleration and a slightly higher rpm at cruising speed.
