1983 K100 oil?

I have had my K100 for a few years, i have never started it, i just brought it home from storage. I noticed the oil level (when on the center stand) is not visible. I only see it when i go from kick stand to center stand. My question is, do i have too much oil, or not enough oil?
It its storage unit, it leaked about a 10" round oil marking on the floor over 3 years. I want to start it up tonight, but im worried there isn't enough oil.  Also, what type and weight oil should i use?

When on the center stand the oil level should be about half way up the sight glass.  Typically that would mean clear on the top half and black or dark brown on the bottom half of the glass.  If it is black all the way up the sight glass when on the center stand you have too much oil, but I would not let that stop you trying to start it as long as you have put in clean gas, charged the battery and all the other long list of things recommended on the site before firing up a bike that has been dormant for a long time.

if you see the oil level when it's on the side stand you have way to much oil in it.  Check it on the center stand. Often the sight glass gets dirty making it difficult to see.  Best bet would be to drain it, change the filter (Delco PF53 is available everywhere) and refill it with 4 qts of a name brand 20-50 or 20-40.

I would recommend avoiding the addition of molybdenum to the engine lubrication system.  The starter's sprag clutch relies on a bit of friction on it's internals to operate properly in a reliable fashion.  Molybdenum is too slippery and even a tiny amount may prevent you from using your starter.

yeah, K motors run fine for hundreds of thousands of miles on oil with no moly.  Even if it doesn't hurt the sprag  why bother?
