USD - How low will it go?
« on: October 07, 2017, 07:59:50 AM »
Im after a USD fork for the K100 and also after something special. And I think I'll found it. The problem is that its 718mm high :-o

I see that alsmost all the USD forks used are from 735mm and up. Some of the longest about 765mm. (Original K100 are close to 820mm)

Anyone running low USD forks? Any pictures of low K100's?

Ha, when I read the title, I thought you were starting a thread to talk about foreign currency exchange rates!  Like NOK -> USD  :riding:

718mm is too short to maintain the proper riding geometry and it could adversely affect the handling of the bike.  If you can find a way to lower the back end and return to a balanced stance front to rear, then the 718mm forks might be usable.  Otherwise, you'll want to stay with as close as possible to the length of the original Showa forks.  You should search for a set of Suzuki GSX-R600 USD forks which are in the range you stated (735mm) but also have a steering bearing diameter and steering shaft length very close to that used on the BMW.  That's important to consider.

I know a former rider who broke his foot and ankle leaning into his very first left after lowering his brick.  Dropped the tree 1" on the tubes and 1" lower rear shock then dropped the bike after he broke his foot and ankle.

Lowered  bricks are low.  Low enough to break an ankle.

I know GSX, R1, ZX and others longer work fine with more or less machining on triple clamp/bearings. And are the safe way to go. But they look boring and quite ordinary conversions... I'm after something that separates it from the pack.

My aft Öhlins damper can be lowered 40mm+ to original. And could make up for the low front. But it will be borderlining between something real stylish or an pot-bellied pig  :blackcloud:
And me being 1.92 high it could look like a man on a pocket bike also  :hehehe

Talked to "Boxermann" in here. Since it looks like he got a low bike, but with original fork:

Turns out that bike are 74cm pin to top of upper triple clamp. And with 3cm sticking up.
Strange since my -87LT has 82cm pin to top of fork.

Looks like a 72cm fork could work if it has the right distance in it for the clamps :2thumbup:
