Obnoxious exhaust unburnt gas smell coming up
« on: September 23, 2017, 06:18:01 AM »

I hadn't noticed it before but because it was so hot yesterday I rode with my 3/4 helmet instead of my full face Arai. I noticed right away a terrible exhaust /unburnt gas type of smell. I purchased a BMW OEM little hose that goes from the back of the crankcase up to the top rear of the air box and will change that this week. Dang hose about 3 1/2 " in length was $47.00!! BMW OEM parts are ridiculously priced. Anyways I'm going to pull the tank in search of the mysterious smell and change out the hose while I'm there.

I have been PB Blastering the exhaust nuts and am dreading trying to loosen them fearful of snapping an exhaust stud. Anyone have done this and can tell me any types to get the nuts off. They had rust on them so I wire brushed and have been spraying them occasionally with PB Blaster.

Thanks for all the help I posted several times with various problems and the forum is always helpful.

Please put your bike's model and year in your profile so it will show up at the bottom of your posts; readers won't need to backtrack to understand which bike is giving you problems. If you've got more than one K-bike in the list, put the one that's the topic of the post in the post's title. Putting your general location in your profile will help others understand what differing costs or shipping challenges might be involved.

Which "dang" hose is this? The Z-hose or some other hose? The z-hose costs about $15 in the USA.

To remove seized bolts and nits, heat is usually applied to them by a heat gun or torch before removal is attempted. I follow heat with a thorough spray of rust penetrant and a wait of 20 minutes or so before applying force. I use an extension on the wrench handle when possible and a strong initial force to crack it loose. The wrench socket must fit snugly. The heat and penetrant is repeated when necessary once the previous penetrant has evaporated. It is smokey technique but it has worked well for me—after the smoke subsides.

The "dang" hose for a 4V model costs $ 47.15 at maxbmw, but it's ~14" long.

Wardie  also put in your town state and country. A mixture of 50-50 Acetone and ATM fluid has been rated the best penetrant. Follow Laitch's advice on application of heat. Sometimes if they wont loosen tightening slightly can help, tighten slightly then loosen while applying penetrant keep going back and forth and eventually they will come off. Unfortunately the exact amount of force is mostly learned by breaking things, so take it slow.
