Emergency Clutch Cable Alternative
« on: August 28, 2017, 10:55:33 AM »
greetings...

this is the $85 oe to $9 hardware store clutch cable alternative...

go getts you 2@ cable ends... go getts you approx 80 inches of stainless cable small enough to thread through the cable ends and of course your existing clutch cable jacket... roll them up and put them in a container and putts them in your bung... and forget about it...

if you aints gotts and you bust one... most hardware stores with hillman fastners will have the stuff... and some napa stores too...

now you have the fixt for a broken clutch cable while on the road...

if oe clutch cable breaks just slide you new cable down the oe jacket and putts the cable ends on there... its that easy...

no need to carry a complete spare kit and nipple...

cable...

round cable end...

hex cable end...

one example...

another example...

ride dangerously...

Riding my fairly new-to-me '92 K100RS16v on Monday, the clutch lever all of a sudden felt...  loose.  About 3/4 mile from my home, shifting started to be a bit harsh.  Babied it home and noticed my cable has broken at the shifter, all but one or two strands...    :johnny

So, two cables on order.  Due to arrive Tuesday.

Why is it I want to go to the hardware store, get 80" of cable, two cable ends, and just run that, and keep the real cables as spares...   :giggles

I may just do that...

Serious question, did you lube the cable afterwards, when you ran it for 20k miles or so?

Thanks!

Great tip Johnny! As a sidebar, the 7x7 Stainless cable is very flexible and will behave nicely through curves and turns of the housing. We use the same 7x7 for rigging shooting line for tuna/wahoo.

Got a nice length of cable from the local Ace Hardware.  However, they don't seem to stock those cable/throttle stops.

Going to check at a local small engine shop and one more local hardware store, as well as the two big box diy stores.

All I see so far are the u shaped stood.  Don't suppose those would work?

These?
