Water temp sensor values
« on: July 29, 2017, 10:21:58 AM »
I'm reading conflicting information on the coolant temp sender values. Some say 800ohm at 15c some as much as 3000ohm.

I am referring to the sensor reporting to the ECU near the airbox and not the gauge sensor near the pump.

Also is there anyway to test the sensor from the motronic plug instead of having to drop the radiator to get to the sensor? I've looked at several stickies without luck.

Bike is a 94 k1100

Just managed to find the pigtail of the sensor without removing the radiator. Purple and brown wires I believe. Resistance across both wires is 2.7k stone cold and 15ç ambient. If I compare that to the values for the 94+ bikes posted on the forum here that would make the sensor way out of spec. 7c ambient should be 1000ohms and the highest value. There are other graphs posted in various threads which are completely different and which report 2700ohms at 20c which sounds about right. So what is the right info¿

Duck's table at the link you referenced seems a little out.  The temp sensor for the earlier K75/K100 bikes is different as is the EFI (Jetronic versus Motronic) so you can't trust charts related to those models.  The sensor in the 94+ K1100 is 12611341602, which is shared with R1100, R1150, R1200 and K1200 models.  Researching on these models brings results that closely match the readings you are seeing, for example http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/k1200lt/139073-need-open-throttle-start.html and on this photo https://get.google.com/albumarchive/101489741192933663432/album/AF1QipN3wKbI5mM6W9Kz8Z0LlnDS0czVu6FWt33uK0yb/AF1QipMPefjf9qC8xo-VzLzbI9L9DHDGWcAnsVlNidPu.

Yes indeed. I have to conclude that the chart I listed is off. I tested the sensor when hot and received 200ohms which is in spec. Thanks you for the reply.
