1985 K100....fuel and spark turns over won't run
« on: July 06, 2017, 09:41:36 PM »
I am 2100 km into a road trip and the bike has been running flawlessly.  I stoppEd for a few days and had the bike parked....went to start it this morning and it would not turn over.  5 yr old gel battery I thought maybe I should not be surprised.  I boosted it and it fired right up.....let it run a bit....shut it off...battery still not charged...let it sit for the day and went to start...battery still dead.  boosted it....turns over fine but won't run.  pulled the plugs...wet with fuel....grounded them and turned the engine over....lots of spark....and flames....lol....I guess the injectors are pushing gas and the sparklers are lighting ...why doesn't it run?

Possible bad connection on the temperature sender switch. Pull the fuel injection fuse #6 Kraffstoppe. Dry out your plugs and let the cylinder air for about 15 minutes. With the fuse still out try and start the bike it should run and start to die as it runs out of fuel. As it dies ram the fuse back in. Helps to have a second person. If this works the cure is to clean the connector to the switch, use Deoxit or something similar not WD40. I also smear dielectric or heavy silicone grease around the mating surfaces to stop air and water  aiding corrosion. The switch is in an awkward spot, but if you have small hands and patience it is possible to remove and clean. Depends a lot on what model brick you have.

thanks Martin....tried the fuse pull idea...bike did not start.  I have now put a new battery in it....it turns over nicely....sounds like it has compression...but I am on a trip so do not have a compression tester with me.  the bike is a 1985 which I have had for a out 7 years and put on about 40,000 km.  it now has about 100,000 on it.  I had it parked for 3 years but relicensed it this spring and have put on about 3,000 km before this happened.  I did have one fuel hose replaced this spring before relicencing and at that time the fuel pressure was tested to be good.  so it has a new battery, fuel, seems to have compression and spark.....it was running fine wIth a jump start and now it does not fire.......
