Starter Brushes Non OEM are available.

Has anyone just replaced the starter motor brushes rather than the whole brush assembly. I had to do a quick clean job on mine in the early hours of the morning. Commutator just needed a polish and the brushes were 10mm both wearing even. I realised after I had assembled it, that I should of measured them, in anticipation of getting a new set rather than the assembly. So does anybody know any individual brushes that fit and a source or part number. Or if not has anybody either have the dimensions or have a set that they can measure. I don't want to pull mine apart again just to do this. I've chased around on the net and haven't found anything. If I can't find the dimension I might be able to borrow a starter to pull apart and measure. I will post the dimensions and supplier if I do find a source.

If I am not mistaken, new brushes are 12mm long and the service limit is 5mm.  At 10mm your brushes should have a few miles left in them.  I would think you have enough time to save up your pennies for a brush assembly if you even really need it.  Cleaning the commutator and the motor terminals was probably more important than replacing the brushes.

Gryph I was surprised at the length of my brushes, after doing 160.000k's. However I'm not just doing it for myself, with Brick part's getting more expensive and harder to acquire I am looking for alternate cheaper sources.Especially in OZ. We have already sourced master cylinders, and I am currently awaiting the arrival of a Chinese copy of an OEM fuel pump. I have had no problem with my pump, but I will replace my pump with the Chinese one. I have another mate working on replacement splines, he is however slow and needs reminding. There is apparently a company locally that cuts splines for drag cars and mini drag car axles, and cuts and replaces them. I intend riding my Brick up until I am buried, and beyond if I can work out a deal with whoever is in charge in the direction I'm going.  :riding: More than likely down due to the NGK leads ( another cheap part sourced).  :hehehe

Well the fuel pump is easy, just find one for like a '91 Lincoln Continental with the 3.8L V6. You can find them for like $18 online

Not too many Lincoln '91 Continental with any sort of engine in our neck of the woods, I would probably have a better chance of finding a Yowie ( OZ version of Big Foot ) I've got a couple of  Chinese ones coming $28.85 US each including freight, a direct copy of the OEM one. Cheaper Chinese ones are available, I went with Global Auto Parts because they appear to manufacture them, and hopefully will back up their product. I've also been told to use a fuel injected Ford Escort one which we never got. I plan to fit the new pump and do comparison tests with the OEM. I'm expecting the new pump to arrive any year now.

Borrowed a starter motor of a mate. Starter brush length as per Gryph 12mm width 9mm thickness 6mm. the braid goes into 9mm side.
Starter bearing 32mm OD 15 ID. Bush was hard to measure 15.5 OD possible 10mm ID shaft measured 9.8 OD.

Brushes can be had in US for under $10.00 . Slight mod needed on these you just have to cut off the bolt. Found these on EBay after 5 minutes just type in Nippon Denso Starter Brushes and compare sizes and wire location. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Starter-Motor-Brushes-2-Nippon-Denso-For-Yamaha-XJ-650-L-Turbo-Seca-1984-/352068070004? I will keep looking for a cheap OZ location.
