Put k100rs fairing on k1100LT Is it easy to do?

Hi guys, there's a compkete k100rs fairing for sale, same colour as my k1100LT.


Is it easy to attach it to my K1100LT?

No it's not easy but that shouldn't stop you. If it's just the RS fairing that's for sale and not the mounting hardware your in for trouble. Those bits may be hard (read expensive) to find. You will be replacing the handle bars, the brake line between the master cylinder and the steering stem, and the clutch cable is also too long. The wiring to the switches on both sides of the bars are also too long but the excess can be rolled up under the tank.
It's do able but price out the mounts before hand. The main fairing mount at the steering head is quite pricey.
I did it to my '85 30 years ago but all the bits were easier to find then.

If all the parts are there(and that can be a very big if) it shouldn't be any worse than taking off your LT fairing and then putting it back on.  Heck, there are at least a couple of K75 owners who put RS fairings on their bikes.  You might want to double check that the tanks are the same since the inner panels need to fit around the tank properly.  One of the conversions was to a K75S, and the owner had to get a different tank.

My RS came with the "middle" bars, and the cables were all a bit taut.  I think the clutch, choke and throttle cables are about 10cm shorter for the RS than for the LT.   I am pretty sure that you don't have to change the bars.  in fact, there are several threads where I have read of owners putting RT/LT bars on an RS so they don't have to lean forward so much to save their backs.

I would spend some time with the MAX BMW parts fiches to get an idea of all the parts that go into the fairing.  One thing I have learned is that the 1100 has different knee pads and side covers from the older 100 so you might need 100 side covers to make everything work.  I was able to put the 1100RS fairing lowers and belly pan on a K100RS with a minimum of hassle so I know there is a fair bit of interchangeability between the 100 and the 1100.

You can fit basically anything to anything depends on how much trouble you want to go to. Example a K100S built by a guy in QLD.

I found out the hard way that the front fairing mount (spider) of the k100 will not fit the k1100. It is just very different.
I guess I could try the later part of a 16v version or the k1100 rs one.


Do you know if the later rs spider would fit the earlier k100rs fairing?


I've got all the bits & pieces, and I believe the fairing itself would fit. I'm not planning on changing the handlebars. I want to be able to put the LT fairing back on.


That said, I put the LT fairing back on, and I'm not planning on taking it in the near future.


Will keep the k100 fairing for a couple of years, and maybe then I'll find the drive to do it.

According to the parts fiches at Max BMW the 16v K100RS spider(holder) is the same part number as for the K1100RS.  The main fairing part number is the same for all three versions of the RS model.   

They are a great resource for checking interchangeability of parts.  K bike models share a LOT of parts across all platforms.

I agree with all the above answers,
I converted a "Naked" K to an RT.
I bought what I thought was a complete RT fairing that had been removed from
an RT model. That owner had misplaced the spyder bracket and I was able to find the correct
one on ebay after several tries. I also bought all the used nuts, bolts and washers in one lot from Ebay for about $35.00.
Make sure that you get "ALL" the nuts, bolts washers, cables electrical harnesses. ( The horns are mounted differently and require a different harness)
I did have to change the handlebars, brake and clutch cables which required removal of the gas tank to run the two different cables.
In the end  I bought the alleged completer fairing for $300 but ended up spending about $700 total.
I had the bike which was red repainted to match the Grey fairing parts.
It came out very nicely.

When I brought the K1100 RS fairing I put on my K100RS it came with the spider and was 100% the same as the one I had on the bike already (except in better condition)

Yep, the older 8V bracket is different... But I wonder, are the front bolts in the same position? Will the 16V or k1100RS spider fit the 8V fairing?

That I can't say for certain but it seems to me it should be possible.


Frankenduck installed a K1100RS faring on his K75 so if that is possible I am sure it can be done on yours as well.
