Fix heated grip (right hand)

I have no heat on my RHD grip, took the weight off, rolled back the grip and the 2 wires are loose...

Where should I start troubleshooting??? Where do these 2 attach?  :dunno2:

It appears that the copper wires that wrap around the grip are missing. You can see the grooves where they were.

I have reattached those wires to the heater on my bike.  You need an X-acto knife, a soldering pencil, some 600 grit paper, some shellac and a small brush, and if your eyes are like mine one of those magnifiers that you wear on your head.  Without the magnifier, all you will do is destroy the grip.

If you take your time, these grips are very repairable.  I've repaired three of them so far.

From the picture, it looks like the wires are broken off where they are routed inside the handlebar tube, not under the resin paper on the grip windings.  Shine a small light into the handlebar tube and look for a break therein.

You mean maybe the wires are just cut? Maybe I can just disassemble the grip, reconnect the wires and that's it????  :mbird

Nope, the copper wires are in place, and they do not seem burnt anywhere...

I know that this is a different bike but on my K1200S the copper wires were wrapped on the outside of that wax paper not embedded in the paper.

On my K100RS the grip wires are routed from the center of the handlebar, out the ends of the handlebar and connected to the grip windings.  If the K1100LT uses a similar setup you may need to pull new wires through and solder to the ends of your broken-off grip wires.   If the copper in the existing wires is exposed use an ohmmeter to check continuity between the black and the brown as they lead into the windings.  If you have continuity your windings are good.

Ok, I know what is going on. The wires just broke off with the throttle twisting. I tested them and they work, but there's just a tiny bit of wire coming off the grip.

Any ideas?

id getts a pair of these... replace the broken wire side... keep the other as spare...

pull the new wire through the bar all the way to the oe connector under tank... solder or posi connect...

If you have some experience with a soldering iron repair isn't that difficult.  Even breaks in the wire wrapped around the grip can be fixed.  You need a 30W pencil with a needle tip and thin electronics solder. 

Melt a drop of solder to each piece of wire.  The hold them together and remelt the solder into one drop.  After a couple seconds to let the solder cool give the joint a little tug to make sure it is solid.  Make sure the wires aren't touching and give the grip power to see if it heats up.

Insulating the repair at the end of the grip is going to be the hard part.  You need something that will take the heat and can be put on with a toothpick or small brush.  A drop or two of epoxy is probably the easiest.  Just make sure you have it fixed before you insulate because it won't be easy to remove.

Take your time, you have nothing to lose...
