Blowing or Leaking some oil

My K1100 is leaking oil from what appears to be the AIR FILTER housing. The little hose that goes in there is saturated with oil too. It's not a huge amount but is enough to make a mess and to cause me concern. It has happened a couple of times.
When it is hot outside and the engine is working at faster highway speeds is when I have noticed it.
Any of you K-Gurus know what's going on?

At a very quick guess, I'd say that it's the crankcase breather hose. Might've come loose or got a crack. They are a perishable and do need replacing from time to time. Another give away is that the bike might not be running as well as it did.

I bought a K100 (haven't told the wife yet - stashed at a mate's place) it was blowing oil all over the top of the engine. Figure that the hose needs replacing. That's for later...

It recycles the crankcase (ie the rest of the engine behind the combustion chambers) gases back into the air inlet (plenum chamber) and then back into the engine for burning (anti pollution role... remember LA in the 70s... the smog... Starsky and Hutch (Huggie Bear)...Baretta... Laverne and Shirley? Thanks America - really advanced the human race. But anyway the smog. That was due to the BMWs NOT having the hose). The oil is (I believe) sent into the plenum chamber and then back down (via a hose) into the engine.

Buy a new hose and replace.

Check the oil level if it is correct and not overfilled, it could be a split breather hose or incorrectly routed. If the first two check out it could be caused by piston ring blow by. You need to do a leak down test either do it yourself, or if you don't have the equipment get it done by someone you can trust. How many miles has it done, and how long have you owned it. Has it used oil previously have you had the air box apart.

Anyway, here's a couple of photos that may clarify Martin's reference, Don. The small arrow in the upper right corner of the first photo looks like the area that you've indicated in your photo, I think, and the similar tube is involved. That photo is from a K100 4V. The second photo is of the tube from a K1100 parts fiche.

I actually just replaced mine.

I believe the photo Laitch posted is not the hose you need.  I think it is this part 11 15 1 461 835    VENT HOSE - I have attached a picture.

If you look at my build post you will see a couple of posts about the correct part etc.

He has a K1100 you have a K100. I got my second photo from the K1100 parts fiche.

It is the same part on the K1100 11 15 1 461 835 - however the easy way to check is to see if the hose you need has the inbuilt grommet to keep it in place and airtight inside the box.

I agree that's definitely the thing to do before thinking it's the wrong part in the K1100 fiche.

Don, the relevant info has been stated/clarified...sure looks like a defect in the hose and hopefully not an indication of excessive oil consumption.

Need to understand spoken German :deal: to get the dichotomy in the first video...with this insight, relevancy could be questioned.  However, a dominatrix is always more compelling :hehehe.

Thanks guys,

It looks like that is the correct hose.   11 15 1 461 835. Mine is kinda mushy feeling when I squeeze it.

My new question is...how much "stuff" do I need to take off to get at the hose and the air filter box in order to replace it? I am referring to the LT shown as my avatar.

That's answer probably needs to come from a K1100 owner, a K1100 manual or extrapolation from the K1/K100RS manual. It appears that removing the tank will be essential and and likely some of the right side fairing components too.

I think you are right Laitch. The tank, and the right side fairing lower., at least. It looks like a tight fit to replace the bottom part of the hose on the left side. I might need to take off some misc stuff in front of the hose connection, we shall see....

Having just done this job myself you can probably get away with not removing the tank.

Side fairing for sure because basically you need access to the air filter.  So take off the air snorkel, then remove the air filter - that is held in place by three springs clips, one at the front and two at the back (note for when putting it back together the front on is the other way up compared to the back two).

After that you can lift the top portion of the air box to remove the air filter.

Then you have three hoses to disconnect, one at the back (the actual hose you are replacing) and two at the front on the RHS.

Then there are the four air hoses onto the throttle bodies.  These are connected with one time use BMW seals but I have used zip ties with no apparent issues... though I did buy four of the OEM seals for when I am done with my rebuild.

After that you only need to disconnect the O2 sensor which plugs in at the back next to the breather hose and the top half of the air box should come out, that is where the hose is located.

It may be possible to replace this hose without removing the upper part of the air box.
Yes, the right side fairing lower has to come off.
The air snorkel comes off, the air filter comes out.

From here, you may be able to remove the lower portion of the air box. It won't slip right out-you will have to manipulate it as you remove it as it has some rubber feet on it's bottom that set in some bosses in the top of the engine, but it can be done.  BTDT.

Once the air box bottom is out, you can work with the rubber hose from the underside of the air box upper while still on the bike, as well as be able to reach the lower hose connection at the rear of the block.

I guess you've been all over those 2 LTs by now.
I knew the day would come when I'd start pulling tupperware off of my K.
Thanks for that technique...I'll give it a try.

And.....a thought came to me as I was researching the offending hose to be replaced.
I saw a few other hoses going here and there while checking out the schematics on the Max site - vacuum, etc. 
Should I replace those other hoses while I'm in there?                                                                                     :dunno:
My only reservation is they all seem to be a bit pricey...for hoses.

..........Anyone else want to chime in?

Use generic by the metre hose where possible and OEM molded hose where you have to. SAE 30 R 10 fully submersible fuel hose has to be used inside the fuel tank,  and 5/16 ethanol proof high pressure for external fuel lines.
