This may be a stretch, but you aren't that far from Asheville. The service manager at Eurosport BMW ( Matt) is exceptionally experienced in K bikes, tons of experience,LOVES K bikes, which I consider an abnormally for BMW stores ( buy, ride,be gone). You might try calling Matt to discuss, then maybe go up with the bike. Don't know anyone else as qualified in SC, GA,FL.

For those that have been following the ongoing saga with bated breath....  :popcorm

After putting together a pinout for the Motronic 2.2 connector (which i'll pdf and link once i clean it up a little), i tested the water temp sensor again, along with the air temp sensor, and found them to be within spec. I took another try at reading the error codes and still got nothing. I tried out the throttle position sensor test, and found it unresponsive- ignition off the light stayed steady regardless of throttle position or adjustments to the tps; ignition on the light flickered very dimly and very fast no matter what. Checked a couple other things that aren't coming to mind at the moment, and the results were consistent- the inputs were fine, the outputs were bizarre.

All of this finally lead me back to... the accursed Motronic box. Nothing else made sense. i bought a used one from kbikeparts.com, plugged it in, and the bike fired up for the first time in 3 months on the first press of the starter.  :yow Too late to shake it out for the Michigan trip i was planning next month, but a relief just the same.

Now to track down a fuel tank filter sock, some spark plugs, and better vacuum caps for the throttle body ports, and try to figure out where all these damn screws go...

The random pieces of rubber in the tank are most likely caused by the ethanol in the fuel rotting away at the rubber boot around the fuel pump that support the pump in its bracket. Replace that boot. BMW no longer makes the fuel pump strainer that surrounds the pump suction but BOBs BMW in Jessup Md. USA has a replacement for it. Contact them. The ECU connection plug may not be making a good connection. Electronic connection grease was installed on the terminals when the bike was manufactured. Since it is now old, you should replace that electronic grease to ensure a good connection between the harness and the ECU. Keep in mind that the ECU is a controller and is designed to complete a circuit connection and act as a ground point to complete that circuit. A good connection is critical to making that happen.

One other issue with these bikes is your engine grounding strap connections have become corroded at the connectors and the transmission / engine ground points. This happens because the ring lug and the alloy are dissimilar metals and will build up a corrosion bond barrier between them. This is a natural reaction and over time you need to clean those connections by removing the ground lug mounting Allen bolt and cleaning the ground points / lugs and reinstalling the Allen bolts. Ive seen this a few times cause problems on the K bikes down below the ECU location.

Find another K1100 and swap the ECU with them to see if your problem still exists if you can't find any sensor issues to see if the spark problem goes away. If it doesn't go away and you can't find the issue, your in over your head and it's time for someone else to fix your problem.

@ unknownroad,

great news that you got it running.  i'd be happy to repair your motronic unit --my brother lives in charleston and could tote it over here on his next trip home.  kenny
