Feuer!, not in a movie theater, WARNING AUTOPSY PHOTOS
« on: June 11, 2016, 11:38:47 PM »
Bummer, and the story is all my fault.  Happened about 100 miles into my ride.  Cardboard cutout  insulator is not all I dreamed it would be.  I was arriving home, and maneuvering the bike onto a patio.  It was running when this event occurred.

i have been dealing with it since Memorial Day. I just covered it up and went about my daily rituals.  It still hurts, but the human always wins..  I think I need a couple of wiring harnesses, and switches..

I have a lot more pix.  Thank goodness that the crazy germans have a lot of kindling in there to burn before the major conflagration. (huge connector covers, and maybe a blanket of tarpaper over the airbox to deflect engine heat from the engine from tank, and wiring, and that baked potatoe foil under the tank?)

I had no fire extinguisher (TIM!), grabbed a beer i (HAD JUST BOUGHT) from the saddlebag and sprayed it in desperation,  neighbor kid was watering flowers for his grandparents, asked if I needed help.  I said "yes" so he started spraying the windshield like he was washing the bike.  bY THIS TIME THE FLAMES WERE LICKING FROM ALL DIRECTIONS FROM UNDER THE TANK. Melted the sides off my tankbag.

Grabbed the hose, and fire was our.  Since the fuel pump is in the tank, only the fuel in the lines went alight.  i DO NOT HAVE HEART ATTACKS, BUT THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT TIME TO HAVE ONE.

So the autopsy reveals that a short from the battery and the box that it was supposed to prevent shorts to, heated the front ABS line, ignited the cardboard insulator, which ignited with a flame, which progressed under the tank.  I do not recommend cardboard in that spot at all. LOL

After the fuel lines melted/burned, the fuel in the hoses burned as it dripped.  Thanks for in tank pumps that shut off with the ignition.

anyway, it is a 94 k1100rs. 48K. I had sold a few bikes to finance dual hip replacements.  This was my "get back on a big bike"  If anyone has parts, let me know.  They are not that bad $ on ebay, there are several separate harnesses on these bikes from what I have read.  Anyway, people with knowledge of what I need, please help.

Man, that's tough.  Wish I could help you out, but I don't have any of the parts you've toasted.

Reminds me of when my Ossa Pioneer lit itself off.  I'll never have another bike with a fiberglass fuel tank.
