Bolt kits?
« on: June 03, 2016, 06:08:53 PM »
I am encountering many worn/dirty fasteners as I'm stripping down my 1985 K100 (early model). Some definitely need to be replaced (like my final drive bolts that are partially stripped).

I've seen some references to bolt kits such as http://www.desmoparts.com/products/parts-catalog/k100-rs-lt-rt/bmw-k100rs-stainless-steel-fastener-kit. In the past I've also ordered speciality bolts from https://www.probolt-usa.com/aluminium-engine-kit-bmw-k1200s-7.html (doesn't look like they have a K100 specific kit). Alternatively I can go to BMW or to the hardware store.

Any suggestions/experiences with any of these possibilities?

greetings zroadhouse...

i know folks who have used the desmoparts.com stuff with stellar results...

personally i use titanium and i even drill out the innards to lighten the motobrick...

when you are whacking and sliding every gram counts...

I bought the desmoparts kit for my K100RS and was glad of it.  A lot of my hardware was pretty crusty and it probably would've cost more to replace pieces bit by bit.

I have used two of the DesmoParts kits on my bikes.  Good results.

I have also bought stainless hardware in bulk on eBay.  Good results there too.

My only complaint with the Desmoparts kits is the organization of the parts and the instructions.  It would be nice if they packed all of the hardware for a particular area of the bike in a single bag.  I swear I spent 2/3 of the time installing the kit looking through the pile of bags for the one with the washer or nut I needed.
