K100rs fairing temperature gauge replacement
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:27:32 PM »
Hello
I recently removed the fairings from my k100rs, but the bike has an issue with overheating so I'd like to replace the temperature gauge. Will any gauge on the market be suitable for use as a replacement, or can I only use specific gauges? Same for the fuel gauge, but I can live without that.
I'd also be interested in swapping out the stock instrument cluster at some stage but I might give that a miss as judging by this forum it doesn't look simple

Hmmmm, bike has an issue with over-heating, you say? Wouldn't you focus on that before a temp gauge?

Yeah, it's on the to do list, i've only had the bike for a few months and haven't gotten around to fixing that yet. It only overheats when idling in city traffic, my short term fix is to turn the bike off when traffic's not moving.

Thanks, i would have searched but I wasn't sure what the temperature gauge was measuring, oil temp vs water. I'm rather new to this.
So your answer seems to be that I can fit any gauge, but it will not read true?

Basically any gauge will show the engine is getting hot, if the sending unit is working. The radiator fan should be cutting on. Chase those threads, make sure it's not seized, consider a manual override switch to self activate. But if this is a traffic issue, are you getting hot from engine heat or is the engine overheating. Flush that radiator........go dig into the Liebrary & research other posts.

To emphasize Ace's observations, if by "it only overheats when idling in city traffic, my short term fix is to turn the bike off when traffic's not moving" you mean the temperature warning light is lit, your short-term strategy may ruin your engine.

I'm not sure if the overheating light turns on, but the gauge gets into the red. Why's my turn off strategy bad for the engine? I'll investigate sooner rather than later.

Tuning it off isn't a bad strategy. Leaving it off, understanding what is causing the problem then repairing it is the one I'd use.

It is not good for a gas motor to shut off when hot...better to run it (air movement) to cool it down.  If you have concerns, install the fan override.  Much discussion and links herehttp://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,8317.msg63091.html#msg63091 all available by searching :bmwsmile.  Like all overheating issues, deal with physical problems first...clean radiator/engine, change coolant(fresh-of proper mix ratio), flush radiator, and make sure the fan is operating properly!.  Good luck

Just replaced mine with a VDO gauge. Judging from today's ride, it reads close enough to correct to do the job. At 1/3 the cost of a BMW replacement.
