WTB: Crash Bar Breakaway Bolts - 46712303070 / 46718554872
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:21:51 PM »
Noticed that one of my crash bar breakaway bolts that connect to the oil pan is broken. I'm sure it happened during a 2mph slipover in some snow last week.

New part 46718554872 (replaces old #46712303070) from dealer is $36 each! Grrrrrr.  I just found and ordered one from ebay for 2/3 that, but wouldn't hurt to have another one standing by.

You might be able to replace it with one of these from McMaster Carr.

Thanks for that tip!

Only two old German BMW engineers know the proper load and shear values though, so I'd be worried about getting it wrong.

Those thing are weak and shear with little effort.  Amazing how other bikes have rigid mounted bars.  I vote for rigid.  Screw the bar and save my leg if and when I ever need it.

I think the rubber mount is there to protect the oil pan cover. If the mount wasn't able to shear, it might crack the oil pan.

I rode for 1000 miles before I noticed the rubber mount had been compromised. The rest of the protection bars seemed fine, but I noticed a rattle sound and slight play in the protection bars when inspecting the bike in the driveway.

It kind of puzzles me.  WTF good is a "protection" bar that is designed to break off when the bike crashes, or even just falls over?

I don;t want to believe it, but I am pretty sure the only reason for their existance is to increase the dealer income after a bike drop by a couple hundred dollars.

I had my RT fall off the center stand in the garage.  Broke the right bar off which then tore a big chunk out of the fairing, damage that wouldn;t have occurred if the bike didn;t have that bar.

Well, a new oil pan is about $200, considerably more expensive than a $36 bolt.

My crash bars were made for the police bike which I assume might be dropped from time to time in order to catch bad guys without taking the time to set the sidestand.

Plus they give me a place to mount the riding lights and horns. :)

Haven't seen 'police crash bars' before.  Are they mounted the same way as the 'tip over bars' or do they pick hard mounts on the frame ?  Pictures would help those of us who can fabricate.

Other than mounting lights which is a good use, they are of limited value compared to other brands of motorcycles.

It seems to me that they would spread the impact load across more points of attachment  taking more load before breaking the rubber mounts.  The extra light mounting points is a bonus

Unloading bars or bolts or both ?  I have an old pair and a new pair but not a complete set of mounting bolts between them  :sip: :sip:

Thinking of unloading it all together.  Might make it easier to sell.  What do you need?  Might be able to bring it up when we get together in May.

K75RT in chrome.  All mounting hardware with the exception of the right side lower mount.
