Another solution for Neutral Bypass relays, GPI setup
« on: April 14, 2016, 06:37:15 PM »
So i did some research on emulating the neutral function for those of us running without instrument clusters. Most threads i found suggested that you either install three relays on the gear position cables (essentially grounding the 3 yellow/other color wires) and sends 12v to the starter. Good option. Then i realized that to do that i still needed the Gear Position Indicator for that to work. Which i dont have. So instead i decided maybe i'd just run a fused line straight from the battery to the starter (i.e. black/green wire) to get my 12volts up there. But Since i didnt have a cluster, my connectors were still there. Instead, I found a steady 12v from the red/white wire from pin 1 on the connector. I shorted it to the black/green wire for the starter and boom!!! She starts right up without being in Neutral. Aside from accidentally engaging the starter while riding (not a likely occurance) does anyone see other potential problems with running this setup? I'm excited to have bypassed the 3 relay setup and GPI circuit mods for this effect. Works great though and starts in any gear but seems almost too good to be true... opinions welcome.

FtM... the red/white wire is for the clock. Figure thats a fairly uninteruppted circuit. And as long as the key is turned i should have consistant voltage there. Not sure how the flasher unit would effect that though..

So, you could have avoided all this rewiring and used the clutch lever.

As long as you remember emulating neutral and being in neutral are not always equal .....

No doubt, Bill. If i had a k-series that was in better, semi-stock condition, i probably wouldnt be making changes like that. Being that the k75 i picked up is a real project, i decided to put some clip ons on it. The reason this shortcut is nice is because people doing "cafe" builds ( i guess thats the term) occasionally need a moment to sit up. Without the bypass they're literally leaned forward for the entire duration of the ride. Its nice to sit up at the occasional stop and take in your surroundings. This setup is a total jerryrig, to be sure. Hoping it helps someone whos running the clutch only configuration
