Throttle gummed up
« on: March 13, 2016, 02:48:47 PM »
I am attempting to clean out the throttle/gear/chain area, as it is so gummed up that it won't allow the chain to return down it's path freely.

1. It appears I will need to remove the front brake master cylinder to get full access to this chain.  Is there a "best" way to do this?

2. It has been well greased, but is very gummed up.  Should I re-grease it, or use another lubricant?  Different sources say different thing.

If the sun shines this week in Chicago, I would love to get on the road!

Undo the large Phillips head screw on the cover, you can then remove the cover, it can be tight so you might have to put a Phillips head screwdriver in the hole and gently wriggle. Once you have the cover removed you can remove the handgrip part of the assembly. The gear with the chain attached can be lifted up for cleaning, no need to disassemble any further. You can clean with kerosene, degreaser or even WD 40, once you have it clean I use white spray lithium grease on the gears. Although BMW does not recommend using lubricants on the internal cable, I use a lubricant called Triflow which is available at bicycle shops. It contains PTFE Teflon and greatly reduces the friction. In 16 years I have never had to replace a cable. You do need to flush out the cable until it runs clean, with the Triflow.

The gear won't come out without additional work.  I have seen pics of the whole thing exposed, but mine doesn't look that way at the moment.

I am hoping the picture posts.

Sweet.  Didn't even have to call my son for help.

I meant about posting the picture.  I'm still clueless about the throttle thing.

You should be able to lift up the edge of the gear & rotate it a bit to enable cleaning. You can also use a small stiff artist brush in conjunction with your chosen cleaner. I have never had to remove my cable but when I lubricate it I fully open the throttle and wedge it open at the throttle bodies. This gives you more cable free play to work with.

I just went down this road with my '94 RT.  If you look under the perch you will see two fillister head screws that hold the front brake master cylinder on the parts that clamp to the bar and hold the throttle stuff.  Remove those screws and you should be able to lift the master cylinder enough to get the gear and the chain out to clean the passages and the chain.   My memory is terrible, but I am pretty sure that the lever itself stays with the perch so there isn't a lot of play to work with.  But I was able to get in there and get a bunch of dried grease out of there.
