Electronic interface?
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:36:57 AM »
Since my clock is only 50% working, I was contemplating brewing up some self-made display/mini-computer thingy to put in there instead. So I was wondering, is there any electronic interface to the engine etc. where one could pull out some numbers that might be interesting to display?

Well if you can find one, there is a product called Fuel+.
It's a fuel management system that replaces the clock display.
The original version was designed for the clock, the newer version, that's also not available new anymore, has a separate remote display.

Check on the ibmwr sale pages as they show up there sometimes. More often than not you will find someone that may want to trade the fuel+ for a clock display in exchange.

If nothing else you could post a wanted add for one.
You could also post for a replacement clock assy as well.

If the clock you are refering to is the one in the instrument cluster then they are available on US ebay for about $90.

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=K100+clock&_sacat=10063&Part%2520By%2520Region=British%2520%2526%2520European&_dmpt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&Make=BMW&_odkw=&_osacat=10063&bkBtn=&_trksid=p4506.m270.l1313

But making an electronic thingy sounds like a fun project.

I bought a K1300 cluster that was replaced because it was scratched on the face (out the back door of a dealer for $50) and have been playing with the idea of adapting it to the K1100 but need more info about the internals to get futher.

I was referring to the clock in the instrument cluster, yes. I was quoted about $50 for a new clock from www.paspeedo.com, so that's certainly an option, although less fun.

The Fuel+ looks nice, but also impossible to come by. However I see that it's connected somehow to the motronic unit, so going back to my original question it seems like there is at least some fuel-related info available there... Anyone have an idea where to look for more specific info on that?

All that the fuel plus does is take a known value(when you fill your gas tank)for your gas tank capacity and then monitor(subtract) fuel used by counting the fuel injector pulses(another set value).
With this information all it tells you is how much fuel is being used and how much is left before you need to refill.
It tracks your miles to refill with a magnet/pickup attached at the rear wheel.
It can also give you your MPG ratings as your are riding.

That's pretty much the gist of it.

It doesn't really connect to the motronic for any other purpose than to read the injector pulse.

I have the newer version on my '95LT. It has a few more bells on it like outside temp and engine temp, trip odo, miles for the day, and another clock.
