Changing the Fork Oil, first time
« on: April 06, 2015, 11:49:53 AM »
I'm changing the oil in my forks ('92 K75S) for the first time. Pretty basic question:

The shop manual recommends changing the sealing washers on both the fork drain plug and filler plug. Makes sense. But I can't figure out which parts to order.

I assume #7 is the drain plug washer. But I can't figure out where the filler plug washer is. Am I missing something?

The slider shown in the drawing is from a Fichtel & Sachs, if you have a -92 you have a Showa fork.
The drain gasket is identical, but just mention it...if you later on gonna order other fork parts.
On the filler plug a o-ring is used, part #31 42 2 312 714, shown in the diagram together with the stanchion.

Those drain plugs are notorious for getting stripped.  Be exceedingly careful when replacing it.

I stripped my drain threads the first time I changed the fork oil. I was able to use a longer screw and Locktite to put it back together 50k miles ago.

Ever since then I've drained the fork oil through the hole in the very bottom of the fork (#12 in first post).

suspension fluud getts real nasty real quick... dirty fluid drains better when its hott... so the best time to drain it is right after a long ride when its still hott...

Another trick for draining oil is to heat things up with a radiant space heater.  Takes a while, but I have used it successfully to heat the oil pan for an engine oil change in a sub freezing garage.  For the oil pan, it would have been even better to use an electric hot plate.
