Center Stand Bushing Replacement
« on: March 02, 2015, 01:33:25 PM »
Almost learned the hard way that the bolts for the center stand (and almost certainly the side stand) are put in with blue Loctite. I wondered why the one side looked stripped. I put some penetrating oil in the threaded hole and let it sit/ absorb for a couple of days. I then tapped the bolt with a hammer a number of times, put heat to the housing (with a heat gun) and prayed. Out she came. As most of you will know/ learn the left hand bushing will wear the most (see photo). I didn't bother with the other side since the play felt about the same as the side I had just replaced. Just watch out for that Loctite if you plan on this service.

Hit those zerks with the grease!  I doubt the previous owner of your bike even knew they were there.

Done, done and done! Thanks. And the spring end contacts as well. The bottoms of the center stand have worn a lot. Do you do anything to prevent them wearing through? I was thinking of either clear PVC hose or having a welder put on a couple of pads.

Haven't had that problem yet.  I have a good centerstand off of my K75 that should work on your bike.  I took it off to replace it with a K1100 stand which seems to be easier on my back when I put the bike up on it.

Gryph,
The flush, happily, didn't yield anything but a few black specks. I think she's good inside. Water flows like Niagara Falls outta there!

Thanks...

Great!  I hope you are close to getting things back together.  As hard as it is to believe with snow up to our bungs, you're running out of time.

I comfort myself with the notion that the Concours is ready to go at a moment's notice...so I won't be without a ride. But the plan is to have the RT ready for Spring....I'll keep at it. Nice photo of your RS.

Are there grease zerks or should there be somewhere on the centerstand? I have not noticed any on my 1991 K75RT, so is there a recommended maintenance procedure? I'm just asking, never have had any problems... But then again, I can be a bit dense at times...

There may be three of them.  You will find them at the top of the three stand legs, two for the center stand and one for the side stand.

The center stand fittings are on the top of each leg into the pivot.  With the stand down they will be facing the rear of the bike.

On the side stand, it will be at the top just below the pivot.  Depending on the year there may not be one there.

Depending on how dirty things are down there, they may require removing some dirty grease to see them.  Even though I keep my bike pretty clean mine were a bit hard to find.
