Lost Running Lights / Hi-Beam Always On
« on: November 03, 2014, 01:12:11 AM »
Hi guys,

My bike got knocked over and basically hit and run about six weeks ago. Bummersville. It knocked out the left front turn signal (smashed completely). I was able to jerry-rig the rear signal with a new screw (the screw got pulled out of the socket, but there was enough left for me to make a new one stay in).

Basically, after it was hit, I lost my running lights on the left side, no front left turn signal (the bulb was toast in the knock over), but the rear signal worked even though I had no running light there. Still had running lights on the right side and everything with the headlamp was fine.

Today I found an old turn signal sitting in my garage today (from my old '86 K75) and put it on the left front. I now have all signals, but I lost all running lights and the headlight is always on hi-beam according to the dash indicator.

The front left signal that got toasted had a soldered connection to the bulb. Never seen that before. I think that connection caused a short (I tried seeing what would happen connecting the wire to the bulb on the '86 that I put in there and the running light briefly came on, but then ...all the running lights went out ... ).

so, I fixed my turn signal problem and lost me my running lights and whatever it is I did to the headlamp ... The bike has been more or less rideable for in-city, short distances, for my commute the past few weeks. That is, until this happened. doesn't leave me in a good spot for work tomorrow night. riding without running lights is definitely not something I wanna do ... the hazards still work, but ...

I'm hoping this description rings some bells with someone out there and there's something simple I can do. I found a kit in the truck from the previous owner. extra bulbs and a couple of fuses. I tried replacing the fuses. No change. obviously I blew a fuse of some kind or a relay? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I couldn't find anything with a Google search or searching the forums.

where would be the simplest place be for me to start with something like this?

1156 bulb is oem turn... one fillerment...

some folks use 1157 bulb which is universal running turn... two fillerments...

all is good with the 1157 if you gotts an 1157 socket... since the oem is 1156 socket... some folks solder a wire to the running element for running lights and use that 1156 socket...

if you aints gotts no low beam your low fillerment is burned out or the bulb and the socket be whack or wiring or switch whack...

dedicated running turn 1157 sockets... run n lites...

will turn your 1156 sockets n bulbs into run turn... signalminder...

Thanks, Johnny. I am at work already. But I'll read through this info on the page you linked when I get a minute.

I kind of suspected that there were no running lights on the signals with the stock bikes and that the soldered bulb with connector was a mod.

There is also no running light on the tail light. The brake light still works, but I seem to recall that having a running light?

This is why I left it alone for so many weeks. I touch something trying to fix something and inadvertently break something else: it's called two wheels, an engine, and a dude.
