WTB: K75S windscreen
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:21:54 PM »
Probably a longshot but just in case I thought i'd ask if anyone has a taller touring windscreen (aeroflow probably first choice) for a K75s for sale. I'm 5'11" and the wind destroys any rides over 30 miles. Lots of head bashing around. I don't mind if it is scratched up or faded, my bike is not much to look at. Just trying to find something effective.

thanks

I got an extra windscreen with The Brickus Turkus
It's an Aeroflow and it measures 19.5" from the top of the lower cut-out
to the top of the windscreen.
Izzat big enough for you ??
You can get more with kind words and a REALLY BIG gun, than with just kind words...trust me

I didn't get a chance to take it for a ride without the screen. After removing the screws I noticed it felt glued to the front fairing. I know it isn't, b/c I put the screen on last year, but didn't want to pry it off and possibly crack it just yet. I am curious how it feels with no screen at 75+ mph but 99% sure I would want a screen that eliminates as much wind as possible.  ...Cue PM to the Turk!

on a 750 s you wont keep all the air off your helmet... so im thinking gotts to eliminate your helmet as the problem before before moving on...

i have had helmets that would buffett so bad my vision would blurr... and thats before weed cookies...

if your helmet buffetts behind a windscrean and on a naked bike its your helmet...

if your helmet buffetts behind a windscrean butts not on a naked bike it the turbulated air...

that's interesting. I did not consider the helmet. When I duck down the buffeting goes away. This will sound stupid, but do people ride naked bikes for long (100+ mile) rides comfortably? I've never been on a bike without some form of screen on it.

My Suzuki GS850 has no screen or fairing.  In terms of wind noise it is the quietest of all my bikes with my Shoei helmet.  My old HJC and open face Bell are noisy.
Unless the windshield taller than your head, it is funneling more air into your helmet, thus more noise.
This is small price to pay for less wind chill and pressure on on your upper body.  I am big guy and at freeway speeds on the GS850 I feel like wind just wants to push me off the back of the bike.
I am more comfortable with fairings, windshield, and ear plugs.

About helmets, yes you pay for more aerodynamic engineering.  I think my old HJC was never put in a wind tunnel.  It was noisy and did all sorts of rude things.

I have a 2014 Honda CB1100 naked.  Pounding out a couple hundred miles is not an issue with my full face helmet.

I'm fairly convinced that the windshield is actually making it worse. I have the taller of the bmw windshields (15" from cutout to top). I can't understand why they would design/sell a windshield that directs air right into the head of a 5'11" person, but they did. I can use my hand to follow the air right to my head while riding. And if i duck down just a few inches it becomes much better. So some German must have been able to do the same thing. Either way I just need to decide between no shield (looks a little goofy on an S), an aeroflow when I have a few extra dollars, or a lip (which is waaaay overpriced).

I'm also in san diego and the winds can be incredible. Lots of temp changes, hills, the coast. It's scenic (for southern cali) but sometimes you're thinking to yourself, "wtf, it's been 7 years and not a single wind free day."  Maybe that's part of the reason they legalized cheeba.

There are a lot of discussions and recommendations around the interweb about K75s's and their windscreens.

One thing I found that helps a little is to add some spacers under wind screen's mounting holes. A 1/4 inch or so on the lower screws and maybe 1/2 to 3/4 on the top. I use the large nylon standoffs you can find at good hardware stores.
This puts the screen at a steeper angle and moves the airflow up a little.

Adding a Laminar Lip may help if you can't seal the deal on a bigger screen. It won't do miracles but helps some.

I am 6'1" and I found the incremental improvements small, but you may see more improvement.

+1 on the helmet thing, I use a Bell RS-1 and I found it as quiet as a Schuberth I test rode, though the noise had a different character. The Bell does have some wind tunnel testing behind it and is optimized for sport bike positioning. Either way though, you still need earplugs.

Finally, I am not currently using the Laminar Lip, it's in good shape but needs new mounting things which they sell. If you're interested, shoot me a PM.
