Fitting aftermarket heated grips
« on: April 03, 2014, 02:45:52 PM »
Hi peeps, I'm almost done getting my K1100LT Project Dog roadworthy  :2thumbup:
The RH heated grip won't work, but the brown and black wire that runs through the bars are ok, I'm getting dual voltages when the switch is rocked.
I just happen to have a full set of Tech 7 Digital Heated grips, the control box is faulty, the supplier replaced them and said I could keep the faulty ones: The heated grips have a connector with 2 wires in it, so can I simply wire them up to my existing wiring?
My grips are worn out (bikes done 93k miles) so I'd be on a winner if I can!
Don't see why not, but best to ask those who know..... :oldguy:

Yes.  There should be no issue unless the new grips draw some obscene amount of amperage. but that is very unlikely

You can't help someone who doesn't want to hear the answer.

Thanks for the reply, I'll get them fitted!
I don't see a problem, they are still just 12V grips......

Grips now fitted  :2thumbup:
I pulled the wires out of the handlebars, and simply joined these to the new grip's wires, after a bit of trimming to tidy things up!
The wires going to the switch had snapped off, so I unplugged the wires at the connector above the tank, turned it round so I had clean wire and soldered them back onto the switch, then cut off the original connector at the other end and soldered them together as well
The grips are getting 8.46V on low and 12.76V on high, they are very hot on high!
