1986 k75s false neutrals and 3rd gear hard to get
« on: November 06, 2014, 01:45:00 PM »
hello folks, i have scoured the forums but havent found an answer to my ills.

first of all thanks for all the time and sharing that goes on here.

i have taken my baby 1986 k75s (127,000kms) on a few longish trips (600kms).
what i noticed first was that moving up thru the first two gears is ok but there is no third gear.
the only way is to just get the revs right and put it in 3rd without the clutch.
then 4th and 5th are fine.

then more recently when in 1st or 2nd it will often pop in to neutral.
the green light does not come on but the gear indicator shows nothing.

i have owned her for about 5,00kms and am about to look at the rear splines with a view to lube them and get a bit of an idea of wear and tear.

once again thanx in advance for any advice that is offered.

I am interested in responses to this question.  My K1100 is fussy about shifting.  I expect when it "pop into neutral" it is really not in neutral but some state between gears.  I have seen this between 4th and 5th.

How's the clutch?  Is it adjusted correctly?  How's the oil?

Two potential causes:
- the transmission input splines need to be lubed
- the clutch adjustment is wrong

There may be transmission problems, but first checking these two service items might cheaply solve the problem.

I second rbm's recommendation about clutch splines and adjustment as first thing to be suspect of. My bike had some shift issues and lubing the splines cured it. This is a regular matinee need and failing to do it could lead to damaged input splines on the transmission.

Another thing to research is "grub screw". There is a set screw for the shifter rod that has been known to get loose that allows slop in the shift rod and all sorts of sloppy shift issues. If you don't feel resistance in both direction on your shifter and have a floppy feel then you may need to pop the case open and tighten that screw. Not a particularly fun job but straight foward. Number of posts here as well as other sites on the process. Plan on replacing your input shaft seal if you open the case.

hello folks, happy new year to y'all.
well i have heard back from the mechanic and its kinda good news.
the fault is found after stripping the gearbox.
a gear selector pin was broken.
he has been able to fabricate a new one and install and the bike is being reassembled as i type this.
pheww.
brian the mechanic chuckled saying a $2 part and a weeks labour.

he is of the opinion everything else is in good knick with nothing showing any major wear.
it will get a good grease and i should be back on the road soon.

it is middle of our summer here in godzone so i have missed my stead.
thanx again for interest and advice offered.
cheers, glen.
