K75s Oil Leak
« on: October 05, 2013, 01:31:02 AM »
Hey all!

I've had a small leak / drip since I got this bike, and recently (most recently after my crash from the other thread...) the leak has gotten much worse!

I have taken photos of where I think the leak is coming from, but I have no idea what this part is - this is where you come in :)

Here are the photos;

So, it looks like the oil is coming from that little connector bit.

What the heck is this?

I have read about Camchain cover leaks, oil filter cover leaks, and the dreaded clutch seal leak, but this doesn't seem to be any of them?

I do have a spares bike which is NOT leaking from that same area, so what can I swap over to fix this?

Plan A - Fix the leak

Plan B - Fit the Belly pan to at least catch the leaking oil before the rear tyre does...

On that note - the Belly Pan, is there any instructions on removing (and then of course re-attaching) this? I have tried google and of course a motobrick search, but can't find any straight forward instructions?

Thanks!

Hard to see where that leak is, I'd clean it off then check for the source.  Could be the bottom of the valve cover?

As for the belly pan, try rotating that front bracket down a little.  That will give you more clearance between the top of the belly pan and the bottom of the headlight fairing.  Then it's a matter of lining up the bracket with the rubber bushings in the belly pan, lining up the hole in the back of the pan with the prong on the bottom of the bike and pushing the thing backwards into place,  then fastening with 2 allen heads through the rubber bushings.  PITA for sure, but getting that front bracket lower helps.

Might be the oil seal in the water/oil pump that is gone.  Do you see oil in the coolant overflow tank?  Is the oil foamy in the sump?

Order a pump refurbish kit from BMW (seal, o-rings, bolts, spacer) and read up on how to replace the oil seal.  Alternatively, swap the pump assembly with the one from the spare bike.  Read up on sealing the pump area; need to use the correct sealant.

pull that rubber boot off, if it's full of oil your oil pressure sensor is probably leaking, easy cheap fix, same as a 1984 318i, about $15 US

Alright, so no oil in coolant exp. tank, and no foam in oil sump.

Be very, very careful when putting the new one in. Make darn sure that the threads match...... I seem to remember someone tried to put a new one in and either 1: cross threaded it and f'd it up, or 2: the threads did not match and f'd it up.
