K75 RT Headlight Removal (?)
« on: May 08, 2013, 11:58:52 AM »
My low beam has died so time to replace the H-4 on my 1990 k75RT. The OM gives detailed directions for the C and RS models, but not the RT. My Clymer's is missing a few pages :dunno Here's what I've done so far: removed the kneepads and storage boxes, windscreen, and the plastic surround piece that the windscreen bolts thru. This gives me some access to the assembly. I was able to remove the connector pin and the rubber boot. That's as far as I've gotten. There is a retaining clip that has to be removed (I think) before pulling the bulb, but I cannot really see it--or if I do see it, I'm not really sure what I'm looking at. In the OM it is a two-pronged metal spring.
Well I don't want to break anything. I'm thinking I'll just keep on dismantling the fairing until the section with the headlight is off. Or is there an easier way?
  Thanks,
Steve 1990 K75RT

If you have the wire harness plug, and the rubber boot off, then you are 99% there.
that "spring retainer" should hinge at the bottom under the lamp, then at the top of the lamp there are the 2 free ends of the spring that you need to squeeze together to remove the clip from the plastic retainer of the lamp housing. Squeeze the clip and hinge the retainer downward to release the lamp.
You should be able to access most of this without removing any of the fairing assy. The RT fairing should be the same as the LT fairings.

Thanks, Scott. When I got home I went back out to the shed with a better flashlight and studied the back of the headlamp assy. I see the large white plastic ring, and inside it is a copper ring with two prongs north and south. I gave this flat copper ring a  wiggle and it came out easily when I turned it. And then the bulb was easily withdrawn. Apparently my model doesn't have the two pronged metal retainer wire. Didn't have time to install the new bulb, but  I'll give that a go pretty soon and will report the results here.

Installed the new H-4 and took the bike for a spirited ride before replacing the lowers and storage boxes, just to make sure the copper retaining ring did its job. It did. Made a note to pick a new H-4 spare for my bulb kit. Well--I hope I'm done with r & r'ing the fairing lowers for the season!
