Oil Pressure (94 K1100rs)
« on: May 06, 2013, 12:03:26 AM »
I know I'm bugging everyone out there - deal with it  :neener:  LOL!

The other night, I started the bike up in the garage (the garage door was open) and, while on the center stand and the "choke" fully engaged, let the engine run for roughly 8 minutes.

I turned the choke off, then shut off the bike.  Two minutes later, if that, I started it back up and my oil light was on.  And too, with these bikes, you can hear when it does not have oil pressure.

I immediately shut it off and checked the oil viewer and did see oil in the area it needed to be in.  The belly pan was off the bike and my garage floor was clean.   No oil spewing, leaking or otherwise.

The oil in there is Mobil-1, 10w-40 high mileage w/ a BMW filter.  There are 2,000 miles on this oil change.

I let the engine cool down for 20 minutes, then before I started it, I cranked it with the fuel switch in the off position, trying to prime it if you will.  The light did not go off doing that, where it has before in the past.  After 3 tries at 5 seconds each (with the light still on), I cranked it back up and goosed it (up to 2500 rpm's maybe) and the light went off.

Do I need a new oil pump?
Cheers!

I'd start with the cheaper options - check your oil pressure switch

You could hear the can or rocks, as I have heard it described, when there is no oil pressure
Cheers!

check the filter.  sometimes the o ring from the old filter sticks to the block, then you have 2 stacked o rings which can blow out.  or it might have loosened up if not installed right. It might have been loose enough to keep pressure with thicker, cold oil but leaked as the oil warmed and thinned.  Just guessing
