pelican 1620 case as top case? Quick release system?
« on: January 05, 2013, 06:05:00 PM »
Hi fellow flying brick owners,

Since a few months I own a K75RT '92. It had standard cases, yet I would like to change the top case for a bigger one. Especially for traveling. I was first checking for the Hepco & Becker Junior 55 yet the versatility of a trolley 1620 pelican case of about the same size sounds great also. Especially as I than could roll away my expensive gear very easily with the wheels...

Yet I still have 2 questions:
- the peli's size is quite  big (54.5 x 41.7 x 31.8 cm) What do you guys think of a top box this big for my brick?
- I will be in need of a Quick release system to easily take on/off the top case. I already found out about the Quick-Lock system by SW-motech. Yet I ask myself if there aren't quick release systems which for I don't need a plate system to bold on my k75 so I can still keep using the smaller top-case too.

appreciate your help,

To the best of my knowledge there isn't anything that bolts to the factory tail rack.

What you can do is use the base from a Givi E181 which you can put pretty much any universal rack on.  The E181 is designed to fit the factory tail cowl holes on classic Ks. You'd need to swap bases to go back and forth between the OEM rack and the E181 base but it's only four bolts to do the swap.

Size is a matter of opinion.

Here's what a 36L Givi looks like:

And here's what a 23L Givi looks like:

I am not familiar with the RT luggage, but if it uses the 22L top case, then this adapter from MV Verholen might be easily adaptable to a Pelican:

http://www.mv-motorrad.de/en/MV+Luggage+Rack+for+BMW+K75+K100RS+K1100RS+complete.htm

It isn't cheap, but looks like a solid design for maintaining the stock rack on the tail.  They sell the pieces individually also, but I am on a phone right now and poking around the site isn't ham-hand friendly.

(If anyone ever sees a group buy on these in the US, please let me know. Unlikely, but you never know...)

For 218 Euros it had better be made out of titanium. :yow

'tis indeed a bit steep to say the least.  Last fall I emailed a few US distributors and $295 with a 5 week wait seemed to be the average with the exchange rate at the time.  I recall the mount part alone being a good bit less, but still too much for me.

I figured given the OP's location, they might have better luck finding a distributor that actually carried them and could get away from that nasty MSRP.  ...still looking for an MV coupon here...hehe.

Edit: "Basic Adapter with Interlock" is the main adapter piece I am referring to.  They still mention the pieces being available individually on that link, but no longer list the prices for each part as I saw last year.

Thanks guys

As I know somebody with a perfect metal workshop (CNC and everything included) factory I'm now thinking of making my own design. Will probably be much cheaper^^

However it will still take some while I'll keep you guys up to date ;-)

Though for mounting pelican cases I found out about this again expensive piece:

I will also end up with not the pelican case but a very similar HPRC case that will be a little bit better in both design and dimensions:
