engine removal
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:05:06 PM »
since my K100 is retired for the year with the transmission problem( you guys were great help BTW ). I was wondering i had plans of pulling the engine anyway and painting the frame and freshening the engine as well this winter. Would that be a better approach and deal with the tranny at the same time? Just getting opinions.
Thanks
Jeff

Yes, do it all at once.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

No but the BMW manual has a section on it. See Page 11-25 here:

If you do it then please report back on how it goes.  I'm considering an engine swap on my K75 over the winter.

If you can knock up an engine stand like the bmw one your life will be super easy. It bolts into the sump and you can basically just disconnect everything and lift the bike from the rear frame and walk it forward moto guzzi style!

Tip: When you remove the exhaust remove the headers and exhaust can as one unit and reinstall them that way.  Getting the K100 headers lined up and the exhaust can back on can be a PITA.

Yes that can be very much like a chinese jigsaw puzzle, I still have bad memories of the first time (and only) that I removed it bit by bit.
