The bad, the good and the ugly.

The oil filter was really stuck after the bike sat for several years.
I eventually got it off with 3 screws through the bottom of the filter removing tool, and 4 ft of pipe on the wrench handle.
I removed the site glass, which had started weeping.
Since the pan was off (for the stuck filter) I cleaned the strainer and, as advised in Haynes, pulled the o ring (20 in the diagram), to replace.

I put in the new o ring but it seems to have disappeared beyond the groove in the pipe aperture, I can't see it in the pipe.

Can anyone help with my options?
Am I looking at dismantling the oil pump now?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would try to use a piece of small wire with a hook to retrive it but if that fails then remove the pump.
If as you say it sat for some time you may find that putting new seals in the oil/coolant pump will be to your advantage as they wont last very long.

I'd be surprised if the gasket material wasn't leaking already.
You likely won't be able to retrieve it without opening it up though.  +1 on replacing the seal.   You'll be glad you did.
