Noob from Richmond
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:10:36 PM »
Hello All,
I just recently bought my neighbor's 1985 K100RS. It was his wife's bike and she never rode it very much. It's my first bike ever and I already love it to pieces.

He sold it to me for $1350 with the hard saddle bags. I am the 3rd owner and it has 33,000 miles.

Cosmetically, It's blue and has the usual scuffs and scrapes, but nothing major. It's never been dropped. It has a little rust on the exhaust cover and in the "trunk" latch. The tires are both less than a year old.

Mechanically, it's phenomenal. The engine runs smoothly and strong. The clutch and transmission are both solid. The only possible issue he warned me about is he said the Hall Effect sensor on the engine may be starting to go. He said when the engine gets hot it stalls out and there's no spark then when it cools it starts up again. He only ever had it happen twice, I've not experienced anything yet. So we'll see.

It needs a few adjustments here and there, namely the speedo and the side stand retracter. I've got a Haynes Manual on order. Once it comes, I'm going to go through and change out the fluids and just do a good thorough cleaning/tune up.

The one obvious problem is with the gauge cluster, the tach, gear indicator, neutral light and clock don't work. The gear indicator is actually kind of funny, in order it goes: 5-4-nothing-nothing-4-5. He said the clock wasn't working when he originally bought the bike. He thinks the gear indicator is a short between the gauges and the sensor. It doesn't bother me, the first time I have to do something major to the bike I'll check into it.

I have two main questions:
First is the fork lock, I've played with it a bunch and the key turns but can't seem to get it to lock properly. What is the proper procedure to lock it?
Second, what would you guys recommend as a good cover for the bike?

I look forward to being part of the forum and appreciate your help.
Pictures will come but it's raining right now.

Welcome, Woahgold.  You will find that all the work you on your bike becomes a labor of love.

My wife calls my K75 my mistress, I would have to agree.

Awesome, I'm not alone.  My wife refers to my K100 as my girlfriend.  Motorcycles are cool that way, they don't complain when you ride them hard and they don't get upset if you ride other motorcycles.

Welcome Woahgold.  Working on K-bikes is not bad, riding them is much better!

Side stand retractor: Place a bent washer under the odd nut on the retractor rod at the top of the side stand.

Finally got around to taking some pictures.
I had to modify the side panels a bit, but they are on now.
