I bought my 92 K75RT three or so years ago with 103,000 miles and a huge stack of receipts. Changed out all the bad rubber stuff, got a new ABS brain, and a few other things along the way. I finally got around to greasing the throttle grip assembly and realized that the marks were not aligned. I foolishly assumed it was good and there was supposed to be a fair amount of free play. I figured I should check the TPS switch and the idle screw too. I recently fiddled with my TPS and realized it was keeping the throttle open, so after a good run to get the engine up to temp, I checked my TB sync, which was good, completely rotated the TPS CCW and set the idle to 1k, then set the TPS correctly.
What a difference. It feels like a new bike. I feel foolish. The bike not what I would consider smooth, though coming from old airheads I thought it was smooth. I think I finally understand why folks consider this engine BMW’s smoothest running. I figured at 100,000 plus miles, the idea of smoothness at all RPM’s was a relative idea.
I have been riding my bike more as a work truck instead of the wonderful sport touring bike it is. In my youth there was a great, but small group of airhead folks in the Portland area that were able to lend experience and knowledge. I have not been able to find that for K bikes except online and while this site is truly amazing, it’s not quite the same as sitting in a garage with a few guys.
