'92 K75 RT - Back from the Dead
« on: August 04, 2025, 05:10:23 PM »
Short story on this bike is complete coincidence I own it.  I was helping my wife with a project about 19 miles from home and across the street I saw a fella getting his bike towed to the dealer for some repair work, so I mosied on over and found his other bike was a K75 that had been off the road for close to 20 years.  Broke a oil filter cover bolt just before a long tour and apparently decided to buy something newer and address the BMW when he got home, which he never did.  I've been looking on and off for a few years for a K75 project, so how strange was this?

Anyhow, I said I was interested in buying if he was interested in selling, left for home, contacted him a week or so later saying I'd like to swing by to make a deal.  Five crisp Benjamins and I was now the owner of a well-kept (except for the old fuel and crusty brakes) '92 RT that hadn't left his garage since it was broken in prep for the tour.  We live close to the ocean, but it's a dry climate and garaged, so everything was in great shape.

Only a few things fought me like a broken speedometer sensor bolt, and something else I'm forgetting.  It smoked like an RD for maybe ten minutes, but settled in on it's own.  Startup was as easy as any of the dead Hondas I've have had go through my shop.  It's a little small for me where my knees are hitting the fairings with armored pants, but I'm thinking a Laam or RDL seat recover will fix that as I've got plenty of leg as is.

So now I've got a 33 year old brick with new coolant lines, fuel lines, pump/filter, brake lines, rebuild front master, splines checked/lubed, rear diff and engine lube, tires, fork oil, and of course the broken bolt extracted from the oil pan cover.  I doubt I'll keep it long enough to know for sure, but it should be good to go for a good, long while.

Only remaining issues to fix are the leaky oil filter cover and the ABS, and I've got the troubleshooting docs printed and ready to review to figure out what's going on.

Welcome!
Is your '08 GS an R or an F?  Do you prefer riding it over the K75?
I have an '07 F650 GS that I've decided isn't for me. But I still love riding my own K75 RT that I've had for 29 years and counting, except for the clunky shifts I'm getting now and fake neutrals that I might be able to improve with a gearbox lube change plus maybe some Moly. Maybe!

It's an R and I actually think it's my forever bike.  I just got back from a camping trip up the coast where it carried all my stuff, and still rode beautifully on the highway at 80+ and on the twisty country back roads.  I kind of wanted to take the K, but I want more miles locally to be sure I put everything together properly and I can trust it for distance riding, and maybe not when I'm carrying all the camping stuff.
