RT throttle cable length required?
« on: July 20, 2020, 10:26:32 AM »
For my '85 RT with original handlebars, am I correct to assume that the replacement throttle (Bowden cable), is the longer of the two from Max's? (details below)

It seems the longer cable would be for the RT/LT, and the shorter for the RS et al.

There's one that's 1142mm long
( 32 73 1 457 378 ACCELERATOR BOWDEN CABLE - L=1142MM (from 06/86) ),
and another that's 1110mm long
(32 73 1 457 016    ACCELERATOR BOWDEN CABLE - L=1110MM (to 06/86).

This is one of those case where I just follow instructions if I don't want to remove the cable and measure it. Happily, Max is providing clear instructions of how one cable style might differ from another according to its adjuster's location. Once it's determined whether the existing cable differs from its replacement because of its adjuster's location, I'd just buy the cable according to the year range indicated in the list and purchase the additional parts if necessary.

One thing seems certain to me. The RS cable length in the 03/84–07/89 K100RS Steering section of the fiche is shorter than either of the examples you have provided.

I recon you want the shorter one, prior to 86, since yours is 85.

The engine mounting bracket for the cable has a different offset on later model RT's.

I replaced mine with an 89 model before I found this out. The 89 cable was too long. I bent the bracket slightly, so now it's only half as bad. I'd rather get a tooth pulled than replace that bracket again. It's on the To Do list for next time I'm in there, which is scheduled for never.
