Wiring around Starter Motor

Howdy, I've just replaced the Engine and am re-connecting the Bike back up.

Question regarding the main wires coming from the bottom of the Fuse/Relay Box.

Big Brown cable - Starter Motor? - Seems to be Ground according to my Multimeter.
Bunch of Big Red Cables - + Battery (Obvious)

Two black cables - Also starter Motor?
- can't remember, see picture for both connected to Starter - is this correct?
Not Grounds according to my Multimeter.

Had a bit of Smoke initially - up near the frame earths - feels like something is taking too much current, hence the question.
All fuses are intact and all lights work bright and fine. Frame Earths all clean and shiny and greased. I've been here before!

Main connection terminal on Starter Motor also seems to be reading Ground - which doesn't seem right, surely this is the positive input - does this indicate a shorted Starter Motor?

Which model and year is the moto?

The starter has two black cables. The brown cable doesn't connect to the starter. The battery has a cable to the transmission attached to its negative post. On some models, a brown cable also attaches to the battery negative post then connects to the frame earths. You could trace brown cable to see where it connects. The Clymer manual has schematics for several models of K75. They could be useful.

Brown to Frame earths that make sense - out with the MultiMeter...

To answer your question about the starter terminal ground reading, or at least very low resistance, this is normal.
When the starter is not energized by the starter relay, the starter terminal provides the "ground" current path for the load shed relay.
Any brown wire connects to either the battery negative terminal or to the bike frame.

Thanks Scott - yeah read that elsewhere after a bit of research - just thought it was weird at first, why would a feed for the Starter be Earthed - get it now.

Brown wire like you say goes straight up to the central frame Earths... bingo and Thanks..

Hey Laitch - 100% correct. Browns go to the Frame Earth
- 2 Blacks to the Starter Post.

Ground to frame already connected - went out to the Garage just now, connected it up, quick multimeter check that way and Boom - Engine turns over so that seems right now!
