I have been doing some odds and ends to clean up my '88 K75S and noticed a couple of strange things about the paint. First, I used some rubbing alcohol to clean off a spot to apply a sticker. I was very surprised to see that it actually removed some pigment. Never seen that before. Then, I had some spots in places that needed some rubbing compound help. I used the compound, then a polishing agent, and finally applied wax. Each step removed pigment, even the wax. I expected the rubbing compound to remove some pigment, but was shocked to see the polishing compound and WAX remove color. These were all McGuiar's (sic?) products.
As far as I can tell, this is original paint. There is no evidence of a repaint. The paint was not completely removed and the final finish is actually pretty good. It shines nicely and I plan to finish off the rest of the bike. Question is: is this normal? I have never seen pigment removed by wax or rubbing alcohol. Strange.
