Changing tank Emblem
« on: June 30, 2018, 11:15:26 PM »
Hi. My 1985 K100 has pretty rough tank and rear fender BMW emblems. Is there a way to change those? The bike isn’t a showpiece, but it would certainly look better if the emblems looked better.

They can be removed, they are held on with double sided tape. Some members have used dental floss to carefully saw through the tape. Others use a very thin bladed screwdriver to lift the edge of the badge and work their way around the edges. You will need to protect the tank with adequate padding so as not to damage the paint work. Go gently, if too much force is applied you can dent the tank. Squirting WD40 behind the badge and letting it soak will help soften the glue while you are carefully lifting up the edges. Reapply WD40 as you go.

Thanks Martin.  Very helpful. Now, the next question, where do I get new badges?

Badges can be bought from BMW dealers  both car and bike. Non OEM copies from Ebay probably Amazon and Aliexpress. There are varying qualities and variations available, the original were one dimensional but some of the car badges are three dimensional. The size you are looking for is 70mm. go forth and seek and ye shall find.

another trick is heat the badge up with a hair dryer before removing, softens the sticky stuff.
