'95 K1100RS coolant leaking onto top of crankcase.
« on: September 06, 2017, 04:44:10 PM »
Hi, i'm from Cambridge,England and new to the forum but several searches for info previously have often ended up here.I have to confess to not owning a K series but have maintained a '93 K75RT for a friend for a few years so am familiar with them. The problem concerns another friends '95 K1100RS. Unfortunately after a serious accident on another bike he's decided to sell all his bikes but is unable to work on them while he recovers ( can't walk yet ). initially he asked if i could fix an oil leak so i've had the back end off and it's had a new clutch plate, output shaft seal, clutch rod seal etc etc.He also said it's got a "slight water leak".To complicate matters the bike has a sidecar fitted which had to be removed as the sub-frame fouls the transmission, not a problem.............but as soon as the bike was off the sidecar and could be lent over coolant poured off the top of the engine.Once the bike was up on the bench it was clear that the O ring on the coolant pipe bolted to the crankcase had leaked, so i removed the radiator and changed the seal.Refilled the cooling system and started to get the bike down the ramp and off the bench. As soon as the bike was tilted or going downhill more coolant leaked!  None of the hoses are wet and it's not from the O ring, it seems to come from under the airbox. Is there a core plug on top of the crankcase?  The bike was serviced at the same time and no oil in water or water in oil, nothing under the water-pump either .Any ideas would be welcome!
Cheers,Colin.

Pull the air box and inspect the water temperature sensor.

Took airbox off to get a good look. The temperature sensor is on the coolant pipe that i already removed to change the seal....no leaks there.Unfortunately no core plugs either but what i could see is a hairline crack on the top of the crankcase!!!
