K75RT Handlebars on a K75?
« on: February 19, 2017, 12:56:19 PM »
Hello Gurus,

At almost 50, I am not a young man  :oldguy: , but I am a noob...  Please forgive my ignorance.
My first bike is my beloved 1991 K75  :k75x , purchased 16 months ago - before I got my license.  It is my sanity... oh, and my commuter bike.

Unfortunately, I do not get to ride every day, but I have managed to put 24,000 km on it so far.

Problem:
My doctors want me to get rid of my bike, because I sit forward rather than upright.  This aggravates an old back injury.  Weekly visits to the chiropractor and massage therapy keep me walking between rides.

Questions:
1. Is it possible to simply swap out RT handlebars for the regular bars that I have?
2. Will the wiring/cabling need to be replaced?
3. Will installing the RT bars get me into a more upright position?

I apologize if I have broken any forum rules... This is only the second time I have ever posted on a forum.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Take a side photo of your bike showing the handlebar, Bryan, at tank level and put it on your computer. Then upload it it here using the Attachments and other options feature below the reply box. That way we can see what you are working with.

I have successfully alleviated a slight back problem by adjusting the bars. I rotated the bars backwards and also lifted the bars with a spacer approx 1". I did not have to change the cables, hoses or wires, I did however have to make extensions for the brackets that mount the dash pad. My bike is however a K75S so you may not have to do this. I did exactly as you propose, fitted Rt bars on K75s.If I remember correctly I had to get longer choke cable and I think clutch cable. You will definitely need longer brake hose from RH bar to centre post, this was the expensive bit,about25 quid.Despite warnings from motor works that bars would hit screen,no problem and loads of room and now no backache😁

My .02c worth:

I've owned my k75S 11 months and I my handlebars are OEM S....  I'm 5'7" tall and my bike arrived with a handlebar lift kit installed, didn't measure for this post but its all of 3".  Without it I speckt I would be quite uncomfortable in my lower back, with it, no issues. My posture is comfortable without the feeling that I'm reaching so far and in the twisties I can just as well bend my elbows to tuck in tight.  Lord I love this ride!!!

My add is this:  The emergency light switch was flakey- loose wire... and upon inspection the PO had just tugged the wiring tight and left it as is- and with vibration -torn the ground wire to where it was intermittent. (intermittent on an intermittent...what does that look like all you theorists out there)  Take time to inspect all the wiring to the handlebars.  When the lengths change the performance of the controls may change too and in my case what should be there in an emergency was....something beyond intermittent, irritating is the word.  I just soldered and shrinkwrapped an extra several inches and buttoned it up.

Putting RT bars on my K75S was the best thing I have done on the bike.  Much more comfortable.  Needed clutch, throttle cables and brake hose change to make it work.

Agreed - RT bars and a custom seat that raised me up a couple inches (I have a low seat model) are the best thing ever for me. I just found the original bars in a box recently -- they've been in there for 16 years and I have no idea why I keep them.

Taking the bar risers OFF my K75S and putting it back to stock S height was the BEST thing I have done to mine.   The riding position when they are adjusted correctly is perfect.  No pressure on back,  no weight on hands.
