Crankcase breather outlet question

I was searching for something else when i came upon this fleabay item which shows a K100 engine with a crankcase breather hose at a 90 degree angle instead of the usual straight up. I'm wondering if its an option or just someone who did the work by himself?

Since i haven't worked on the crankcase itself yet. I'm wondering how hard or easy it would be to replace it with a 90 degree outlet instead ?
is it screwed or press fit and such?

I understand the hose is inexpensive, still curious tho...

Check casting date of block.  Maybe early with a different ninety degree stub.  If it works use it.  Have often wondered why that pipe came straight up.

I found 2 of these on the bay... not that I'm looking to buy them...


one was on a 91 K100RS and another was on a 95 K1100LT block


maxbmw has a different part number but already NLA but I don't think that's it, as all the diagrams only show the one pointing up.


so I think its someone "upgrade".


I've looked for something close to the pic but I don't think I know what its called to properly find it.

Hey, what is going on with parts prices?  The vent hose that connects to that vent is $13+ I seem to recall that about a year ago I bought that same hose for $9 and change.  Also noticed that the tank badge has gone from $15 a couple years ago to $31 now. 

Between discontinued parts and some of these price increases I'm thinking BMW doesn't want us riding these bikes much longer.

Well, the newest USA ride is going to be 20yrs old this year, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are wanting to thin down parts inventory and try to get riders to a newer ride.

Glad I did most of my R&R over a year ago.  I bought tank badges at $15 then, too.  I paid about $240 for the retrofit heated grip kit back in November (which seemed expensive) and now the price is at $499.

I too have seen price creep on little parts.  Buy a couple clamps, a small plastic piece or two, maybe a fastener, and boom, 50 bucks!  Not that you can't afford it, but sticker shock to the point, does corporate really not like selling parts for old bikes to home wrenches?  Is this a trend?  Most everything is still available for airheads, but some brick parts are starting to be NLA.

OEM parts have always been dear in OZ, it's cheaper getting them from US, UK even with the ridiculous freight costs.

I prefer expensive to unobtainable - I need a couple of mirrors for my k100RS and they have stopped making OEM ones and second hand they are becoming as rare as hens teeth.

For me, BMW parts from a dealer are now a totally last resort. 

With three bikes to maintain, I could be good for a minimum of $400 a year from a dealer's parts department just for maintenance items, let alone parts for repairs.   I would have no problem buying branded supplies from a dealer if they were competitively priced, but with their present price structure there is no way.

Don't they realize that parts traffic helps keep owners of older machines coming through the showroom and in passing contact of the new machines BMW has to offer.  It's too bad the brain trust is willing to lose that traffic in the search of larger margins on parts.  They have already  driven off most of the service department cash flow from the classic K bikes. 

It's been said that the business plan at the motorcycle division is to sell to affluent professionals who trade for a new bike with more bells and whistles every couple of years.  I wish them luck.
