bump stop on shock

Bust my Nivomat on a manhole last week. got a replacement used BMW shock today, fitted it and took it for a test drive, after returning i noticed the bump stop in the top of the shock had started to break up. i removed what was left of it, and took another test ride, the bike handles great and great suspension. do I need the bump stop? can i open that shock and fit a new stopper? I'd hate having to go to the bother of having to return it to the UK and wait for a new one. if its safe to ride without the stopper I'm fine with that, but would appreciate comments and advice.

My bump stop was at the bottom of the shock, but it had degraded beyond servicable use, so I chiselled it outta there.

I don't believe it will make much difference, it depends how much in the way of 'beans' you intend to give the machine.

I wouldn't be a hard driver by no means. 70-80 max. nearly all the time solo. I take it the bump is there to stop the shock bottoming out too harsh, rearly happens to me. the spring and damper are in great shape.

If you don't use it for Moto-X or hit large holes or kerbs at speed you should be right. At a pinch you can get one from a shock specialist cut it at a angle and hold it in place with a stainless cable tie.
