Troublesome battery anchor
« on: March 19, 2017, 09:30:31 PM »
So my new to me K75s 1987 came with a Westco battery that when you place the bar over the battery and run the long bolts 176mm btw , the theads don't even engage with the base without twisting the bar bending/distorting it to grab a thread or two.

The battery appears to be slightly taller than the OEM unit.  Anybody else experience this?  Whats the fix?

Ever try to buy a 180mm x 6mm x 1.0mm bolt?

I tried adding a coupler at the base  with threaded rod in the base...only the 10mm of thread I ran above the plate into the coupler makes the top of the bolt hit the ecm brick above the battery.  tight clearance....

This just feels stupid, but if I could BELT SAND 1/8" of plastic off the base of the battery :mbird  the original bolts would work...How much meat is there on the bottom of that casting.  stupi\de.

Or,  I thought about somehow building a recess into the bar that would bottom out the bar a few MM lower.  Id have to weld a thimble shaped socket to the bar, below the hole.   complicated fab....

I could divot the bar with a punch, cold stress or may heat with a torch and beat on the hole area to drive the top of the bolt lower by a few MM..

ideas?  help!

If you want to go the route of buying a longer bolt you can get them at mcmaster.com for a littler under $7 each.

When the bar is on the battery are the flanges of it resting on the battery or is the longitudinal center of it?

I have the same problem with my "Big Crank" ETX-30L battery from batterymart.com.  Haven't done anything about it yet, but plan to get either longer bolts, or nuts and all-thread. Going to need a fatter rubber grommet to retain the coolant reservoir as well.

When I bought my Wesco battery from Beemer Boneyard they included the longer bolts - or I ordered them from there, I forget.  I made a longer grommet to hold the coolant reservoir using a cut-off section of a rubber leaf spring bushing that I found in my 'leftovers' supply bins.

Greetings Brick bretheren.

Laitch, best I can tell, I have the bar oriented with the battery touching the longitudinal in the upright orientation.

So today I patronized my local specialty hardware vendor Fastenal and while they didn't have the length I require they did have lengths of threaded rod, so reluctantly and knowing the weather is balmy I opted for the scheppo fix...threaded rod and doubled nuts.

Then to my rescue was Brick newb Robp and his online vendors suggestions.  I had prowled mcmaster a month back and they didn't have it in stock however this boltdepot.com looks to be the solution I required  thanks for the tip.  The rod will get returned...:
