The Story So Far

So, having started to strip down my low mileage K100 (spent a lot of years standing - see pics in 'Returnee' in the 'Welcome' section), this is what I've found so far.  The previous owner got it running after 17 years standing by replacing fuel pump, injectors and battery.  After 50 miles, he then left it standing for another 4 years.  There are bits missing from every part he worked on: two of the four bolts holding on the seat catch, one battery strap (long) bolt, coolant reservoir cap, fuel tank holding clips, all four injector clips, fuel hose clamps (yes!), lock washers on the fuel pump nuts, and so on.  The battery is a tiny 12 amp/hour jobbie and the Rickman fairing was missing a third of its 6 fixing bolts.  Another two were loose.

Luckily for me these are the only sections of the bike he appears to have worked on.  Inside the fuel tank is surprisingly clean, but the brake fluid is the colour of a slurry pit.

If anyone in the UK wants a Rickman touring fairing, I'll put it in the parts section soon.

Well, it's running.  It took a bit of cranking in short bursts before it showed any sign of life, then it was away.  Lots of smoke for a while, which didn't seem to go away until after it had been switched off, stood for 5-10 minutes, then started again.  Then there was no smoke at all.  Weird, can anyone explain that?  I think it had been on the side stand for years.  The horn(s) didn't want to work at first either, but again suddenly started working before I had chance to investigate.  There are no drips from the rebuilt water pump - yet.

When the weather cools down a bit next week (I'm not good with heat, not used to it) I'll finish it off and then see about getting an MOT.

Progress.  Good.  If you turn off the bike and lean it to the right for about 15 seconds before putting it on the side stand, the oil drains from the left side of the engine (top of cylinders) over to the right side.  The owners manual says the smoking is normal.  Also some use center stand to keep oil from getting into the top of the cylinders...I think I recall reading somewhere that after a few early years the K75 bikes received better oil seal rings.  Someone please correct if anything I said is wrong.

Thanks, yes it's been on the centre stand since I got it.  I suppose years of sitting on the side stand (and possibly being started occasionally) took their toll.  The puzzling thing is that the smoke didn't stop until it had had a 'rest'.  Let's hope it stays that way  :yes

Well, it's now 'finished', MOT'd and on the road.  It left a huge smokescreen for a mile or so and then it cleared.  So far, only one small oil leak from one of the timing cover screws, now hopefully sealed.  It runs beautifully.  I did find one or two more horror stories during the strip/rebuild.  For example, when I unbolted the fuel injector rail, it almost fell out in my hand and the fuel hoses - in addition to not being clamped - had massive cracks in them.  It's a wonder it was running at all. 

And don't the radial tyres make a difference.  This is the sweetest handling K100 I've ever owned.

What brand and size tires did you put on the snowflakes?

The tyres are Bridgestone Battlax BT54 front (110/80R18) and Avon Azaro AV46 rear (140/80R17).  The Azaro is clearly old stock, being dated 2011.  I spent hours on Google searching for radial tyres and these came from a large company in the Netherlands, free postage.  It looks like I was lucky with the Avon as they appear to have run out now?  http://www.pneus-online.fr/pneu-moto/avon/azaro-st-sport-touring-av46/140-80-r17-tl-69-w.html.
