Pathetic Horn
« on: November 23, 2015, 04:56:21 PM »
I found the standard K75s single horn pathetic.Have now fitted 140DB nautilus air horn extremely loud. I put a switch on the pad so I can switch between the stock
horn and the air horn.I have also wired in a led light bar to the same circuit.I paid $35 Au at a local car supply and $17Au for 6 inch 6 led light bar(available as flood or spot
I chose flood as I wanted a running light) which I thought was reasonable, .I have had less scary moments mainly due to the light bar but the horn definitely works when cars try to change lanes into you,or cut you off.I did this because I was driven into and side swiped by a light haired person of a non male gender driving forward not backwards out of a car space. She used the standard SMIDSY defence (Sorry Mate I Did Not See Ya).Result bumps & bruises $2600 damage to bike covered by her insurance.
Regards Martin.

"pathetic" is what i was thinking too.  I plan on installing a pair of Hella supertones.  i have a pair in my classic car...nice and loud.  not as loud as that air horn though!

In my case even not so great minds might think alike.  I've been pondering a horn upgrade as well.  Two RT horns is how I think I'm going to go.

I used the air horn because it was the loudest most compact I could get (125 X 112 x 78).I got it of ebay and they had their address which is a few suburbs
away & saved on the freight. They have two sizes the car one slightly larger 150 X 112 X 78.Thought this was a bit strange as otherwise specs identical. The brand is Stebel
Nautilus don't know if available US.

Gryph, no doubt about the quality and efficacy of the RT horns. Couldn't believe it first time I hit the button. I need earplugs when using that horn! All bikes should carry those babies. Use sparingly!

Mlytle, yes. Stock horns (on my '86 RT). They are an Italian brand....can't think of the name off hand.

Cool. Thanks!

I would have thought they had used same horns on all the 75's

Do you mean the FIAMM horns? The black plastic ones shaped sort of like a nautilus shell?

The horns on the 1100/1150 RTs were good - they had a pair of metal button horns that look similar to the single horn on the K75s.

Yes, the Fiamm horns that are used on the RT.  I, too, was startled the first time I hit the horn button on my RT.  I think that the RT uses standard auto horns.   The way they are mounted in the fairing throws a lot of the sound back at the rider, but they are still pretty darn loud.  Just got a working pair of used horns.  Just need to figure out a way to mount them on my S.

Yup, that's the name. And you're right, Gryph. They do send a lot of sound back towards the rider. That's why I mentioned ear plugs. The only other horns I know of that would be as good are off of a '79 Cadi DeVille! My father drove one of those old boats. What a car! Bullet-proof. But it was the horns I loved. They had a very distinctive dual-tone. Not sure how big they were. I doubt they are any bigger than the FIAMMs.  Mlytle, I forgot to mention that I have a K100RT. Good luck.
